Hey all,

While I am laid off this week and next I am going to "spruce up" some of my decoy's. Here's the question, where is a good place to get a decent paint without driving up to Bass Pro?

A friend uses Flat Acrylics, does a good job... I imagine any art place would have them... Don't need "decoy paint" just need paint in the right colors...

I was told by a guy that you had to use special paint that did not glow from the UV.

So he said that white paint would glow a different color to them.. is this a farce?

Also he said you should use a paint that doesn't go shiny when wet..

I agree about the flat paint Greg, aside from a Mallard drakes head... Not sure about the UV, first I hear of that.

Hey Drew,

I found this website last year. LOTS of great ideas and suggestions - including how to paint your decoys. Here is the link:

http://www.takeem.com/painting-decoys.php

They are very good about the paints to use (Wal-mart and Home Depot) and they show you a 30-minute (approx) video of how to paint your decoys. A very detailed process.

They also have information on how to tune your duck calls, make a motion "feeding" duck using a duck butt, and other useful stuff.

It is a subscription service ($24.95) for a year. I have joined and found the info VERY useful. Now I just need the time to work on all this stuff!! (LOL)

From my experience repainting mallards I'd go to a hobby store and buy model paint, the bottles are small but they do go a long way. The chest is hull red, flat white, Satin black for the wings and tail and gloss black for the eye and I spend the extra for a spray can of metallic green for the head to produce a more uniform shine. The bodies are a mix of greys and browns. To highlight feathers get a large brush dip into a contrasting colour and blot it on a piece of paper towel. then the brush looks dry lightly and gently brush the feathers. Just the high points should get a fin coating of paint. (look up Dry brushing technique) Finish with a Spray clear of flat paint.

Bring a good looking decoy with you and talk to the staff they can help match the paints and give advice.
