I would love to hear from people who have ran thier dogs in Both as to the major differences between CKC and UKC Hunt tests.
The reason I ask is I was looking at the CKC schedual for this year and for me there are more CKC events that are easily within a decent driving distance of my home. Too me it looks like I would get a "bigger bang for my buck" by running the CKC circuit.

Drew,
Biggest difference I found was the gun and the talking to your dog. In HRC you shoot over your dog in all but started classes. You can talk to your dog to turn him. In CKC you may have to carry a disabled or toy gun but you do not use it. There may be a gunner beside you shooting or gunners out in the field shooting, but you do not shoot yourself. You are also not allowed to talk to your dog from the time you signal you are ready to start the test until all the birds are down and the judge says "dog". another thing not done in HRC.
Some people might disagree, but the requirements for each level of CKC is a little higher than HRC. In HRC started, dog does not have to deliver to hand. In CKC Junior, they do. HRC Seasoned and CKC Senior both have doubles, blinds, walk-ups and diversions but CKC has longer blinds and also must honour. HRC Finished and CKC Master both have multiples(3 or 4 marks), blinds, honours, as well as walk-ups and diversions, but CKC also has a quarter and flush, and usually a little more technical on blinds. HRC sometimes has more confusion at the line, but CKC is catching up fast in that area. I know this is long. You didn't want a book.

Just to add or clarify Anne's comments - HRC does have lots going on at the line BUT the other point to consider is that all HRC tests have hidden gunners, usually without any noise or attention getting devices in the field. HRC believes this imitates a true hunting scenario for the dog.
CKC, while they do use retired/hidden gunners, they will usually have some attention getting device (duck call or starter pistol) that will get the dog to turn and look in the direction of the mark.
The CKC "no talking" rule is a recent change and I would expect it is considered a bit extreme by some. I believe it was instituted as some felt handlers were "intimidating" their dogs with voice commands.
Keep in mind with HRC, you can fail a test for "excessive noise" (either you or the dog) if in the opinion of the judge it would "disturb the hunt".
With gas prices as high as they are, I can understand why you are looking at getting the "biggest bang for your buck".
Just another thing to consider with the UKC/HRC and going to the US - some clubs hold "back-to-back" hunt tests, and they are usually on consecutive weekends. So, for example if you took a week vacation with the family to the US, you could leave on a Friday, take in two hunt tests by CLUB "A" in the first weekend. You could then vacation/train for the week in that area, and then run another test in the next town with CLUB "B" on the following weekend. Drive home Sunday night and be back to work on Monday morning with 4 passes!!
This takes a bit of planning but it can be done. I have even seen some go for two weeks and take in 6 tests.

Just to add one more thing to the posts above UKC/HRC you MUST wear camo clothing when you are on line. The biggest thing for me is not waiting for the judge to say dog at CKC/HT. :dog: :dog: :dog:

The judges may require you to wait for them to call dog in UKC if they want, I have only had this happen in Upland Tests though.

The only other thing to consider is that the AKC and CKC do not recognise UKC titles. They will recognise each others.

The way it was explained to me all you have to do is show the judges that your dog is steady after the last bird was thrown and landed. I have never ran an upland test. so I do not know that part of the test.
In the upland test the dog flushes the bird and then has to be steady, he doesn't have to sit, just be steady, in the last 2 uplands I entered the judge called dog after the flyer was shot and down.
