Hey Guys,
Well Mercedes finally came into her first heat. Since this is the first female that I have owned that I have not fixed I have never been thru this....
How long does the bleeding typicaly last?
Obviously I gotta keep her away from the boys for a little while, how long until she is in the clear ( I do not want her breed!! )
Oh, when they are in heat do you usually forget training/running marks during this time?
Thanks guys
Drew

Hi there. Bleeding is dependent on the female, but typically it lasts 14-25 days.
She is not "clear" from the boys until about a week or so after the bleeding stops. Only because...in some females...bleeding decreases and almost ceases right when they're ovulating and some bleed heavily throughout the cycle. I consider them safe when the vulva returns to normal size.
I continue training, etc. while they're in season. Again, every female is different. Some get dumb while they're in season, and some you couldn't tell the difference.
My dogs continue to be full-time house dogs while in season-I just make them wear the fancy underwear you can buy for this. We have no males...so we don't have the issues on seperation that you will.

Keep her under lock and key for the next 3-4 weeks.
You could keep training, every one is different. Some get pretty scatter brained others train like nothing else is different. The people you train with that own males may feel a little different.

Drew, although Ive went threw it with my dogs, i still cant figure it out. Like jiggy says ever dog is different, my girl will bleed for a month and acts all funny threw most of it. If you can get a hold of John C, that man knows his heats, I was amazed when he breed my girl to Kramer. He could tell just by looking at her. Give him a call, hes a member here isnt he? he knew more then my vet about the heat cycle!

Usually they bleed for about 10-12 days and then they clear out for about 5-7 days(breeding time) and then they will bleed again for about a week.
They are all different though.

Thanks guys,
I have had male's all my life except one female and I fixed her at 6 months so this is all new for me. As for the lock and key..... trust me when I say NOTHING that walks on 4 legs will be going near her for the next 3-4 weeks.
It's just to bad I have not had her testing done, I could have flew in a straw of Creek Robber and I would be rich..... :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:
Now back to reality.... :spoton:

Can't make any money selling really well bred field dogs, go down to the park and look for someone with a standard poodle though and just watch the $ start pouring in :cheesy:

Drew,
my bitches first season from the day I noticed swelling to when I was sure the season was complete was 6 weeks. The bleeding (or discharge ) went on for 3 weeks.
This is my 5th uinfixed female and I would not have beleived that was possible if I had'nt seen it. I hope you don't go through that with your pup.
You may think this is a croc of shit but I also gave the dog a chlorophyl tablet morning and evening and I had no dogs interested in her. I live in a rural area where often neighbours male dogs are untied less than a 1000 yards away.
Just luck I dunno.

Hey,
After 3 days of bleeding I came home from work today and it has stopped. I noticed last night it was not as "heavy" as it was the previous 2 days.
Is this normal or is there a "false heat"?

Drew every female is different just keep and eye on her I have one who bleeds heavy then lightens up and keeps herself so clean it is hard to tell she is in season other than the swelling.

Like Chris said when they're in season they're in season. I was suprised at my dog being in season for 6 weeks as I had never seen that before.
First indication may be a slight change in temperament and the obvious one is the size of the vulva. Know that and you know when shes coming into season.

I have a girl who has "split heats". She comes in, bleeds for 2-3 days, then stops. Then starts again about 2 weeks later and has a full heat.
I have heard that chlorophyll helps mask the odour.
I have bred bitches at 9 days and at 25 days and both had normal or large litters 8-9 pups Also bred at 13-15 days that they say is prime and 1-2 pups . There is alot of factors. Terry
