Pitch in with your own please.
I put up this picture on another thread and then had the idea that it would be quite typical to show a normal "excursion". The picture was taken from the back of the truck on our return, but the beginning of our foray is easily visible in the background of the picture. The quarry was Sharptail Grouse and the objectives we hit are labeled in order from 1 to 3. After working objective 3 we headed east (left on the photo) for about 3/4 of a mile before swinging north again and following the dotted landscape along. The swing back to the truck was made about 1/2 mile north of the truck and carried through a large objective about 1/2 mile to the west. Total trip was about 6 miles and took about 2 1/2 hours. 4 trips like that makes a day.

The area in the pictures below is in the Huntsville area and where I do a lot of my grouse and woodcock hunting every fall. It is all private land and I am the only one that bird hunts at all on in.

Is Ruffed Grouse your main quarry?

Ruffies are my favorite target but we do get into some good numbers of woodcock when the flights come down.

That is why it can be hit or miss alot hunting upland in Ontario. We have lots of ducks and are almost overrun with geese in places but upland birds are not as plentiful as in the west.

Wow, Mav. How did you get so lucky?
There are some hot spots in the Bruce Peninsula.

Hey BdB, what do you call plentiful? Or are your birds almost non-existant. The walk described in the pictures was late Oct. and the birds were starting to gather. The walk yielded 3 points, 2 of which gave shooting opportunities, which put 2 birds in the bag. It was one of the more productive courses for the day. Normally by that time of the year we are looking for that one covey that exists somewhere in the 2 sections of land we walk - or maybe they don't. Then when you do find them you are keeping your fingers crossed that they will hold till you close somewhere reasonably close to them that you can justify pulling the trigger. Sharptail only get tougher and tougher to hunt as the season moves along.

Here's some typical Southern Ontario Woodcock and Grouse cover, can be a fantastic spot for woodcock if you're there when they're moving thru.

And some late season grouse cover, still a couple weeks of the season left, hopefully we lose some snow this weekend!
