View Full Version : Winter Hunt/Training

We put out some chukars on Friday for a hunt to take the edge off the lack of time in the field recently. I used it as a training session for my dog Beau. Things were pretty good for the hunt but I know where I need to work with him. He hasn't hunted much with other dogs and I wanted to get him backing and staying steady, not just with the flush and shot but other dogs retrieving in front of him. There were retrieves with one of the other dogs walking by within a few feet of him carrying the bird and he was steady until sent on again. We had one of the other dogs relocate on a running bird and I made him stay while the other moved on. I was pleased with a lot of his performance but still have to work on his steadiness as he has a high desire to retrieve the birds.


The three dogs were on point at the same time on different birds, a single and the others on a double.

It was a good day, the dogs had a good workout running through the snow and so did we, one of my buddies is not in great shape and was feeling it later.

That shorthair looks exactly like my guys mom. Any idea on the lines behind it.

Man you have a pile more snow there than we have here. Great photos..:nice work:

You need to get him out with other dogs as often as you can, and thats why you should have came grouse hunting with us. There were enough different dogs around (mind you, if you have seen one viszla you have seen them all :sorry: {now the viszla owners will be after me}) and lots of birds to go around this year.....Maybe need to get Ryan to come here . yah leave thousands of birds to come here ........

Maybe you 2 need to come here. Pheasants, Partridge, Sharptails, Ruffies, Snipe, Ducks and Geese.....yah you guys need to come here.

That snow has gone down, there was even more but the mild weather and rain brought it down. It was up to the top of the bucket on the skid steer and the dogs backs before Christmas. I do normally hunt a few times with that GSP and Vizlas but not this year do to working too much and schedules not working out. It is hard to back when you're in front most times.:bigrin

I am packing now , just need to figure what healthy excuse I will use to take 4 weeks off that I need rehab in Alberta. :icon1_lol:

Who's viszla is that... getting on in years...and I know what you mean about tough to teach backing when they are aways out front. Thats why I stay back and do dishes.:clap2:

Nice pics BdB, that's a lotta snow. We just got another 6" overnight. Big thaw predicted for next week, just before the closer. Hopefully in time for a few more outings for "partridge".
