Bryan you're a little far away but if you ever get this far east let us know you are coming. I'm hoping that Chris and Artemis will come put on a demo for the dog club. She flies him quite often out here on the farm. He is beautiful but she has to keep her eye out for our resident red tails.Tomorrow we are going to introduce Chris to the world of retrievers. I sure she has room for one more in her menagerie.

I would be happy to do a flight demo or to show off Artemis anytime, just let me know when and where.....maybe I could show the Lab people what upland dogs can do in partnership with a hawk(LOL)

Yah they work together, but the dog gets the hard job, if he cant find game or cant provide the hawk gets mad at him, Artemis hasnt hurt the dogs but he does tell them to start finding game. I was rasied in a traditional hunting family but to me the best hunting trip is one where I dont fire a shot and I still fill my potbecasue the dog and bird work together

I love to watch them fly, but it's another thing to fly them.
Just let me know when, Artemis will have his vaccation this summer(no flying) so early spring, fall and winter are good for him but I may get another this summer(it's a toss up between another bird or telemitry). We will start huntting rabbits again after the next cold spell (march) but between now and then, catch as much sky as possible.

I was thinking about bring the birds to a game farm, but this year we have been finding lots of game so far. A Harris Hawk will fly anywhere but when you fly large falcons you need some more open space. Its nice to know that option is always there

Sorry I missed Atremis having his fly today. Hear that momma red tail showed up. Those birds must have exceptional hearing and/or eye sight. Thought your Viszela took well to the bumpers. He is steady so getting him to retrieve to hand shouldn't be too big a problem. Will treat him like a lab and really confuse the poor boy. Chant thought he was pretty nice.

You didn't miss much of a flight today. When it was his turn the wind started to pick up so we only did 4 or 5 recalls (less then 5 mins flying) On a normal day he will fly for over an hour. But he comes first, so I don’t fly in high winds, 1 hour before sun set (wild owls start to get active), cold temps (below -7C) or if he is acting "off".
I think the Vizsla pup thought that we were all crazy today, I am sure that he thought that I was nuts because he had to bring me bumpers, not a bird a bumper (he is knows birds)...you can't eat it so why do you want it? If you want it why do you keep letting it get away?
I may end up with a Vizsla with an identity crisis, but it is good exposure

Hi Chris, probably a dumb question, but I am intrigued. How do the birds and dog work together ie.does the dog flush the game, then the bird hit it in the air?who brings you the game? This is so exciting for me,I have to be careful or my labs may soon be wearing orange(lol).

In a perfect world:
The dog works the field, forest brush pile whatever, the hawk watches both the dog and me becasue either of us can provide it with game. I typically use my vizsla with the hawks(but sometimes the JRT), because vizsla are close ranging dogs and they are hard to loose(they were bred that way for falconry) Artemis will fly above the dog and me. When game is located dog points(hopefull holds) I make sure everyone is were they should be then the quarry is flushed, Hawk kills, I trade the hawk for its kill for something small(its not that i fool the bird, he knows what he is giving up he is trained to do this in the hunt), the game starts again
But if the 3 of us go out often and the dog does not do his job(find and provide game) the hawk will get upset and do fly bys at the dog. He does not make contact but he makes the V jump and work harder to find game.
I also like hawking without the dog becasue it challanges my bushcraft but in on some terrain a dog is a must and when the hawk is done I get the gun and the dog gets his fun.

Talk about being at one with nature!!I would rather see this for a couple of days in the winter than a couple of weeks laying on a beach for sure.

When just you and the hawk go out,and you aren't comming up with game, does the hawk tune you up?

No because we spend a lot of time as a pair(I think he thinks of me as a mate or at least a family member) so he doesn’t know if you are just doing obedience, exercise or hunting. There is a lot more involved in the training but, that’s it in a nut shell.

Yep,I've been living a sheltered life.I'll have to try to get out your way,and maybe even get a chance to train with Anna.
Regards Bryan.
