Good lookin dogs, and those "EYES" look tasty!!!

Ross here, aka "nimkii". I have a 1 year old Ironridge's Luck of the Irish known as "Abbie" that will be hunted and tested. She came home with us a year ago on St. Patty's weekend, hence the name. I wanted to name her Hell Finally Froze Over because I had to wait 10 years to get her.

Well since we are starting fresh in a new forum I will add mine as well.

The name is Drew, I currently have two Black labs ( a 3yo male and 8m old female ). My male is Diesel and he is my hunting companion and will be trying out his luck in HT's this spring .....

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j220/Diesel-Dog/Diesel-1.jpg

And my female "Mercedes" who will be beginning her Field Trial career this June in Long Point. So far from what I can see she has all the right stuff to succeed, it's just if her trainer can do her justice...

For what it's worth I have been involved with Labrador retrievers since 1965 one way or another, back in those days the only game to play was field trials or hunting and in 1994 I purchased my first chessie and I found the UKC/HT. got involved with GBHRC/HT since then I been from Ontario to S.Carolina going to UKC/HT what a journey I had with my first chessie together we put a Finished Title on him. I buryied him in my heart almost 3 years ago, now I have a female chessie and her son life is very interesting at my place. One day I will learn how to post some pictures it's pretty hard to teach an old dog new tricks sometimes

This is my dog, Babyducks Esox Masquinongy Dax. We sought him to become a seasoned angler, but since we got him in November we've decided to start training him for field and test hunting. I love spending time with him, teaching him things and seeing him develop. I know I'll never see that with him through fishing, thus the change in mindset.

Here he is on the long trek home from Mike's place in Chatsworth, fresh with tattoo ink in his ears. He made himself at home in my Jeep and slept the entire way. The clearance behind that bar is about 4 inches, man did he ever grow fast!

http://myfishingpics.com/photopost48c/data/500/DSC00699.JPG

This is a recent picture of him from our training session with the LOHRC. What a great group of people. His training is coming along well and since the help of quackaddict, he's had no problems taking to the birds.

http://myfishingpics.com/photopost48c/data/500/DSC00851.JPG

These are pictures taken today. He just celebrated his 6 month birthday on the 13th. I may be biased, but damn he's cute! But the day I never see another puff of that stuffing will never be soon enough!

My forum name is "ducksoup" -- got first Lab when I was 12 -- tried training her but too much of family pet --when I first finished university I got into FTs --got my first BLM named "Pat" -- we both learned a lot -- had other dogs as pretty serious about this retriever game -- finally got YLF out of FT lines (sire was Going Going Josh); ran Junior and Qual with her -- bred Tammy to Marathon Man kept YLM out of that litter -- Marty was a pretty fair Junior dog -- then bought BLF out of Tanker -- Rosie was also a very nice dog --sold off Marty and Rosie (both ended up getting MH titles) -- got into HTs for a while -- then got out of dogs for nearly 15 years -- bought BLM Maxx out of litter out of Click and Tessie (both field champions) -- he's now about 17 months old and I'm very excited about him (could be best dog I've ever had but then they're all special, aren't they?!?!?)-- been trained by Gloria and Dan DeVos since he was 6 months old -- currently down south -- FTs are my main interest -- looking for a good year with Maxx as compete in Junior and maybe a few Quals -- eventually hope to get another pup (female) and get back into breeding (she'll be trained for FTs as well) -- when I'm not talking dogs or training, I guess you can find me working as a social worker
Mike Ormsby
P.S. I'm not very good at posting pictures -- Drew posted Maxx and Dan DeVos on old forum site -- if it could be transferred over here that would be nice -- oh I wish I wasn't such a unTechie

My name is Pam and I have always loved labs. I am a Wildlife Artist and also paint hunting and fishing pictures. My poor old dog Sandy is beyond going out hunting now, has cancer, arthritis and just stays by my side.

The upside of this forum is I get to admire all the beautiful dogs here and occasionally get to use an image for a painting. (With permission of course.)

Here's my girl, Pied Piper of Hammond, Call name Piper, I got her from KevinHannah on this forum, and have so far been very happy with her. I've learned a lot from her, and what more can you ask for! I wanted to run CKC Hunt Trials with her since JH, SH, MH is easier to remember, but there are few clubs in the area who run CKC, so it seems I'll be supporting the Brits! :fencing:

http://web.295.ca/~kodiak/piper_haul.jpg

Also included is my haul from the Toronto Sportsman Show, I picked up two Uplanders, Dogtra RRD Releases, Starter Pistol, Mega Clear, Meatgrinder Goose Call, A Canvas with Streamer Hand Launcher Bumper, and 8 Lucky Dog Bumpers...

I also picked up a set of Waders, and Red Head Bag, and a Box of Extended Range turkey shells...

All in all an expensive week-end... Anyone need their grass cut? Windows Cleaned? :boxing:

My Name is Lori and I'm owned by Brittanys since 1990. I love most Breeds but I'm stuck on Brittanys. Right now I only have My Girl Kiddy home with me. She has 2 legs on her Field Dog Junior Title and we will try to get her ready to finished it this May. I hope!!
She is a Show Champion though and The Brittany Spaniel Club Of Canada's 2005 National Best Puppy. But I'm now wanting to work on her Field Titles if possible. We got a 2nd place in the Derby Stake that was held with the Prairie Province Pheasant Championship Trial and that was exciting. 2 Good Points on her birds and a Point on a Dead bird near the end. She had not been Trainied on Pheasants before that trail. I don't know if that should make a Difference but it was always Chukars before that.
http://jayhawkerbrittanys.com/kiddyfdjsecondleg.jpg

I also own My Boy Jeb but he is in Pennsylvania right now for a possible Mating but while he is there he will be but into Field Shape and try some the the Events hopefully
He is an Am Ch / Can.Ch. and has his Field Dog Junior Title and a Leg on his Field Dog Title and Some USA Field Trial placements but no points. Jeb is the boy with Kim Handling and Molly is one of my owners girls Handled by Vern in this picture.
http://jayhawkerbrittanys.com/jebmollyfdj.jpg
I co-own a boy for now till I breed to him this August. Smokin Bandit. He was ranked #1 Brittany in Puppy Field Trials in 2003 and #2 in Derby in 2003. He also got 2 points on his Field Trial Title for a 1st placement in Derby at 8.5 Months old. He has his Field Dog Junior Title and was a Best Puppy in an All Breed Show and got his Show title . Now he lives with his co-owner and has done nothing but hunt since then. I wished he would have still been going to the Trials . He was really good boy. Smokin Bandit is the Brittany with the Blue Ribbon and My Daughter is holding the Presidents Trophy he got his Name on. So Cool.
http://jayhawkerbrittanys.com/photogal/smokingbanditsderbywin.jpg
I also Co-own a New Boy who lives in Florida but will come up to me for a Visit at 2 years old for a bit to try him in some Canadian Events. Trace is his Name.

I am currently owned by three brittanys.

My oldest girl Jersey will be 14 this August, and although I did not have the time I should have to get her trained when we got her she has been about the best friend and constant companion you could ever hope for in a dog.

CH Ruffwood's Dixie Girl FD ( Dixie )
Dixie will be 5 this August, and has been all I could ever ask for in the way of a grouse and woodcock dog. She has finnished her Canadian Show CH and her Field Dog and Field Dog Junior titles in CKC Field tests. We also have a 2nd and a 3rd in American Field Derby field trial stakes. Dixie was recently bred to Jaybritts male jeb and we are expecting puppies in 3 more weeks.

Knine's Ghost Rider FDJ ( Maverick )

Maverick will be two this August and so far is doing very well for a young dog.
He spent 3 months training with a pro last summer and two more months trialing with him before coming home to hunt the fall. We had agreat season and he is back out with a pro again this spring trial again. Thus far this year we have a 4th and a 3rd in our first two trials. we are hoping for a few more placements this spring before getting ready for adult stakes in the fall.
He does have two show points so far and his Field Dog Junior CKC titles.

My name is Shane. I currently don't have a hunting dog (looking), however, have attempted to re-train my retired (recovered over 1 million dollars in narcotics in her career) narcotics/weapons detection dog (black lab) to hunt birds....she will retrieve until your arm falls off and hunt well through the day....she knows the game, however has become shy of loud noises over the last few years...could not see myself shooting over her as she might head for the hills..LOL!
Here is a photo of Alley (10yrs) enjoying her retirement. Enjoy

Hey all,
Glad to have been directed to the new forum. I use Sterregold as my screen-name but answer to Shelly or Red in real life.
I've had Goldens since 1995, but have only got into the Hunt Test game in the last three or so, and it's taking over my life!!!!
My older girl, Juniper just comes along for the ride. She's just happy not to be left at home.
Then there's my big guy, Winter. A friend at obedience class gave me the good talk about getting him involved in what he's meant to do (Thanks for the bank account drainage 3BD's!) Yes, he's a show fluffy, handled to his CH. by yours truly, but he likes birds, too. Some of 'em still do!
Here he is with one of his finds from the 2006 season...

And here we are with an early-season drake...
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l281/sterregold/Greenhead1a.jpg
And now I have a young'un, Breeze, who is 8 months old, and can't wait to play with some real birds! She was a little small yet for the whole goose!

She was donated by a family in the Hamilton area as they were having a baby and she had way too much energy to control and they were concerned she might un-intentionally hurt the child. She was donated to a company near Fenwich, Committed to Canine that trained Police dogs....she was originally trained in only narcotics detection but I included firearms and ammo detection after we started working together by her retirement she could detect nine different odours. Alley and I were partnered up in June 2000, she was retired in March 2006. We (she) placed 12th in Canada in 2001 at the Canadian National Police Dog Championships and fourth in 2003.
I was able to keep her on her retirement and she is enjoying the time as a couch dog and retrieving with my children...however when I come home in uniform she is upset that she is not able to come to work anymore.
She is a wonderful dog and were are fortunate that we were able to keep her....sorry for not posting earlier....I was not able to post anything for a while not sure why....thanks Drew for clearing it up.

Got my first lab in 1993 from my sister. GBHRC was using our property to train and she thought I should join the fun. My husband says he hasn't had a decent meal since. We now have hrch Ebenezer's Evanders Echo SH WCX CD 2004 Gold Whistle winner,
HR Jerryru's Eclair at Ebenezer SH WCX CDX - running qual
Ebenezers Expensive Ego-trip WC CD JH - bumped her up to qual from junior last year and she finished 2 of 4 trials with a CM and a 3rd. Was pleased because her junior career was not stellar.
Ebenezers Erebus Enchantress yr old in basic training hope to run some juniors with her this year
Cady's They Call Me Willy not mine but might as well be, hope to get him into some juniors this year as well.
I am president of GBHRC this year. We will be holding a fun hunt on the farm on April 22. Had hope we might be in the water by then but the weather sure has been crappy. All are welcome e-mail privately for directions.

I own a Chesapeake and two walker/beagles. I know quite a few of the members here from my days with the Georgian Bay HRC in the early 1990's and still keep in touch with many of them. Anyway, I'm settled here in Thunder Bay and when I'm not retriever training, I enjoy hunting and fishing and spending time with the family.

We had to put our 12 yr old lab down this spring and we were going to take some time off from a dog but this little fella was too good to pass over. We miss our lab dearly but since I hunt upland more, I wanted a versitile breed this time. I have high hopes for this guy. Our lab "Gunner"

Hi everyone,
I hear that I am being talked about on this forum, so thought I better join and keep an eye on that! My name is Liz Macpherson, I breed Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers under the kennel name Rowantide. I purchased my first Toller (Tidy) 8 years ago to do obedience with. I met Rita Jones, a Chessie breeder, when Tidy was about 13 months old and she convinced me to try field. Although Tidy thought dead birds were disgusting, I was quickly hooked on the game. I kept a puppy from her first litter (Taylor) and the rest, as they say, is history. It has taken us a bit longer to get where we are, mostly due to my inexperience and lack of experienced help. But we discovered the Lake Ontario Hunting Retriever Club about 2 1/2 years ago and have learned alot since then. We are having an incredible year this year - Taylor passed her 3rd & 4th Upland tests in April for the title (first Toller in Canada and 3rd in HRC history), 3rd Seasoned pass in Kingston for the title, 4 CKC Senior Hunter passes in a row for that title and has currently passed 3 Finished tests in a row! I am also running her 1/2 sister (Bounty) and a male that has been here for about a year (Boots) in both HRC and CKC as well. So far this year, we have 26 field passes, finished 9 titles and a CD (novice obedience title). Sometimes I think I am dreaming!
Here's a group shot of my current gang.

Hi Liz,

Welcome to the board! I just joined a couple weeks ago. I should point out that Liz is the reason there was a whole ton of Toller folk entered at the OV HRC - she kept sending us all emails saying how fun it was! Of course now I know why Liz thinks these tests are so fun - she nails a finished pass and then comes to the banquet and wins the Winger!!! If only we could all be so lucky :-) But seriously, we had a great time and are looking forward to trying seasoned next summer.

Just wanted to say hi and intorduce myself. I am Ryan and I own German Shorthaired Pointers as the name implies. I have recently gotten into waterfowling and the weather gets a little too cold for my shorthair so I have decided to look for a lab. I have never been a big lab fan but I think I am starting to see the light. I know nothing on how to train a lab other than the obedience so I have alot to learn. I have been cruising back through the forums and finding some good articles.

I really need a dog that can take the cold, still do water retrievies in minus 10 without freezing to death, and has excellent marking abilities.

Anyway just wanted to say hi. Here is my GSP

Thanks Tim its a whole new world for me. I know all the pointing lingo and how to look for a good pointer but this lab stuff is all new to me. Like going back to square 1.

I also hunt and Irish Setter if she wasnt coming up 8 I would force fetch her and wouldnt need a lab. That dogs marks and finds birds I didnt even know I shot her retrieve is less than excusable though. I dont know what it is but waterfowl she doesnt like. Pheasants and partridge she is 100%.

Hi everyone! My name is Carly and I'm from Oshawa, Ontario. My screen name is what my orange kitten is called when he is bad - which is often. Normally he goes by Max, and his brother is Oliver.

I am not yet a lab owner, expecting a pup in January, but researching field trials/hunt tests and was pointed in this direction. I've had border collies my whole life so a lab will be a little different for me I think.

I'm hoping by coming to this board that I will be able to find some people or a club that would be able to help me train my pup and learn more about retrievers in general.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated :)

Hi all. Thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Marcy Borgford, and I live in Lethbridge Alberta. I'm 32 and work as a paramedic and my husband is a paramedic/firefighter. Shift work is very condusive to these dog games we play. We have no kids, but are currently owned by two awesome dogs "Darbi" and "Miikka". We originally bought Darbi to be a replacement for my soon to be retiring at the time Search and Rescue dog, but somehow got drawn into the retriever world. We really had no clue what we were doing, but read everything we could find and practiced via trial and error. We made pilgrimages south to work with a pro and Darbi saw her first duck at 7 months old. We ran an unoffical puppy stake with her at our local trial when she was 11 months and we were hooked! Darbs is a dream for a first time handler. She was #6 Junior dog in Canada, finished the first Open her or I ever ran when she was 2 and now she's qualfied for our first National, which we hope to run next year. Darbi has spent a total of 6 months with pros in her life, 4 months with one that just about ruined her (ask me about that sometime)...and 6 weeks with one who taught me more about her-thanks Colin!
Miikka (named after Miikka Kipprusoff for you hockey fans) is a complete joy. She makes me laugh every day and is the best temperamented dog I've ever seen. We sent her off to a pro for her Basics and she has taught me more about dog training than Darbi. Miikka is raw talent...and then some. But she's NOT Darbi and I've had a hard time wrapping my head around that-pushed her too hard, too fast-but I'm learning and we're getting our mojo going now. Two different dogs...two wonderful dogs...I am truly blessed. Miikka made it to the last series of the first Open she ever ran...and then handled on the last bird-no greenie that day. We have high hopes for her next year.
The trial game totally sucks sometimes...the highs are much more infrequent than the lows. Thick skin and stubborness gets me through. I am obsessed with the intricacies of the game and try to be a true student of the sport. I have so much to learn it is mind boggling.
Our wonderful dogs brought my husband and I into the world of hunting and we get out every day we can. Ducks/Geese/Pheasants/Grouse, etc. They bring so much to our lives...they live in our house and sleep on our bed, and I couldn't imagine life without them.
Nice to be on the forum with Canadians...
Cheers,
Marcy

Some of you have probably found from a few of my posts that I can be a bit of a smart ass,but it is always in good fun.I look forward to meeting you all over the next few years,so please introduce yourselves when you see my name or my dogs names on the running order at the trials.

Hello to all and a brief introduction. Yes I have a confession -- I am a Toller owner. This is our second pair with the first two coming from Sundrummer Kennels back in 1977 when there were not as many around. Our current two "Duff" & "Mic" joined our family in 2003 / 2004.

Our primary focus is hunting and fooling around a bit with tests. Work interfers far to much with time to allow to be as serious as we would like in the HT's. On the hunting side we have a good time with both upland and waterfowl. Pictures are from last fall.

Hi All,

New to the forum and new to 'formal' dog work.

I've hunted with dogs all my life, a Irish Setter, a ISxLab, a labxspanial and my folks dog whom I still steal and work with a Chessy.

Two years ago I finally bought 'my own' dog Odin - a GSP. He was out in the field with me the week we got him:
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_0659.JPG

Just recently I joined the BC All Pointing Breed Club and have started looking into doing trials with him (at least to get him his FDJ). We wanted to do NAVHDA, but with no chapters in BC it's tough.

He's more grown up now and a great hunting dog (not so good on retreive, but great and finding and tracking them)

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/IMG_0228.JPG

When I do want something actually brought back, thats when I call Jade

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/jade.JPG

Thanks for listening and looking forward to learning some :)

Greetings all!

I am new to this forum and signed up at the urging of member "Junior", whom I met at another site. I met Junior last week in Toronto and for such a young guy, he sure knows his stuff about dogs, hunting culture and life in general. It was a pleasure Junior.

I am retired and live in New Brunswick (woodcock central) and follow a 6 year old pudelpointer and a 2 year old GSP around in the fall. The GSP has been enrolled for "graduate school" in Ontario this summer. After hunting behind 5 good and 3 great dogs over 40+ years, this is my first time in using a pro trainer.

Hello all!
My wife Jessica and I joined a few months ago so we figured it was time to introduce ourselves. This is our first Lab, Homer (yes, as in Homer J Simpson as many of you thought I'm sure, we figured he was yellow and thinks with his belly, "Homer" fit the bill). Homer will be 1 year in just under two weeks. He was initially intended for a life as a loving family dog, however seeing how other trial dogs can work got us intrigued. We met up with Ron at the Toronto Sportsman Show :nice work: and he directed us here. There is a lot of great information here and we hope we can absorb at least half of it. We were able to meet up with a few very knowledgable people in Niagara through this forum and it is paying off for which we are greatly appreciative. I started off with the training as an excuse to simply get out and spend some time with my dog, now I must say, I am rather looking forward to his first Hunt Test in the near future.
Hope to meet more of you in the future.

Richard, Jessica, and Homer

PS: as you can see in the pictures, although he LOVES to swim, sometimes he prefers to just run on top of the water...he gets there much quicker!

Hi All,

I tend to lurk on these forums since I don't have a "typical" breed for this area and don't have much advice to offer, but I thought I'd introduce myself. I have 3 Catahoula Curs and a Catahoula/BMC cross. I mostly use my dogs to work our cattle, but do go south on occasion to hog hunt and trial, and coon hunt. I'd like to try my guys out on some blood trailing as well this coming fall. I also conformation show them a bit, and do really well with that, especially considering my dogs are the only Catahoulas in the ring that are also full time working dogs, scars and all!

In the past i've had 2 dogs. A beautiful big chocolate Lab Male and a female Chesapeake bay retriever. My chocolate was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia at 1.3 years old, by 1.5 years he was retired and became a great family dog.
I got my Chessie from Wis. She was gung-ho from the start...Would rather retrieve then eat. She came with the hip guarantee but at 18 months she also was diagnosed with level 2 hip dysplasia. A call to the breeder resulted in the ole "Send her back and we'll get you another pup".. We all know the outcome of those transactions. So, dog #2 becomes a family pet. That was 8 years ago.
After 11 years of great companionship my lab" Stormy" died 2 month ago of lung cancer. Maggie my Chessie is still kickin around the house. Neither retrieved a bird in the last 8 years, Although they sure were spoiled by my family.

So I'm here...Refered by a good friend..Wayne Dibbley.. www.retrievercoach.com. Renewing my faith in hunting dogs, breeders and trainers.. Dont worry Dibbs..He will come to you for training..lol.. And yes... My next hunting companion will be a Chessie, a big dark brown, blocky male..

The search continues...............................

Hi everyone!
My name is Derek. I have been a member on the forum for a month or two now however, I havent been posting at all. Just reading and soaking up everything I possibly can. I'm a young 20 year old and a die hard angler and hunter. Hunting and fishing has been my life since I was young. In the past few years, I've been a hunting and fishing guide in Northern Ontario. I also fish the pro-canadian WFN/CSFL bass tournament circuit as a pro for Shimano Canada and my other sponsors. A black lab pup is on the way to my arms next week from "misty morning retrievers" in Indiana from the "fly" litter was recommended by Chris of B-Line Labs. Im incredibly enthusiastic about dogs, and the outdoors. Getting this dog and working with him in the field is something I'm really looking forward to. I will surely be joining the SWORTC. My goal is too really focus on my future dog and have him be the best he can possibly be in the field and at home. Im also setting my eyes on FT's / HT's. I'm very excited in meeting you all and learning from everyone. I'm sure I'll be firing out questions quite frequently! I'm always up for hunt, and if anyone wants to fish for some good old southern ontario bass in a beautiful 21ft Nitro bass boat with a 250hp Mercury pushin' ya, PM me, love taking new friends out and sharing my knowledge. I''ll be sure to post picture of my new pup Diesel when he arrives :)

Hey guys,

New to the board so here's the intro. Live in Ajax, I see there is quite a few GTA members on here. Been waterfowling for 10 years and just finally got my first lab. Presently she's 4 months old, and a chocolate. New to the whole training game, so expect lots of questions! Hope to meet up with some of the members on here for some training days and maybe a few hunts! Take care

Hello Everyone.
I'm new to the board, but must admit that I have been reading and absorbing great information here over the past months. Great community you have here.

Been a lab owner for as long as I can remember. Currently don't have a dog, but looking into it and have come fully equiped with questions of all kinds. Had my companion Cody, a Golden of 13 years rested last year and feeling the void. Never had him field trained, but did a fair bit of obediance with him.

Hello

I'm brand new to this wonderful site - well I admit I have been lurking for a few days :emmbarassed: reading all your wonderful posts - very informative.

I love all gun dogs and have a real soft spot for Labs and Spaniels. However now I feel it is time for somethig completely different! I am awaiting a GSP pup that will be ready to join my loving family in early April.

Thanks to all who posted pics of their beautiful 4 legged family members. After all a pic is worth a 1000 words. As soon as I welcome my new 4 legged friend I will be sure to post some pics.

I look forward to contributing to this fantastic site and learning something new from all.

Take care

We have been here for awhile but never posted yet, we have had labs for years and been involved with the Georgian Bay HRC for a long time now. We are not as active in the retriever end of it as we would like to be as we also belong to and are very active with the Muskoka District Kennel Club so we are also involved with obedience/rally and show. Our kennel name is Labracorn a little fantasy when you cross a unicorn and a lab. Like reading the stories and success of all here as well as the tips offered.
So thanks for letting us in Leif & Fay
These are our guys and girl Addy, Colt and Nitro.

Hi all, just saying hi.

Im a new lab owner, first one for me. I'm a hardcore waterfowler in the southern kawartha lakes area.

We just "rescued" a 5 yr old chocolate. We've had him for almost a month now, and he's awesome. His old owner said he hunted him for the first two years, then had kids, moved, had another kid, and Wyatt was "neglected". He's a good dog, loves to retrieve, but has some bad habits.

I'd love to get him retreiving my ducks, but Im not sure its doable at this point. Is he too old? He has basic obedience down pretty good, minus a few bad habits, but he's never been force fetched, and I'm not sure he's ever retreived a bird, even though his previous owner says he has. I'll throw him a bird, he goes like a rocket after it, gives it a sniff, and looks at me with that look as if he's saying " this isn't a bumper or ball". Once I tell him "here", he will bring it to me.

With a bumper he'll do anything I want. He has a hard time with stay when I throw, but that's all we've been working on, and he's getting better for sure. I think we're ready to get a little more serious now that he's adjusted to being in a new home with new owners. He responds to me very well, always comes, and never takes off. I've never had him on a leash. He loves the water, and has no fear of big waves or jumping off docks to get in.

Am I wasting my time trying to get him retreiving? I don't want a trial dog, or a champion, just a dog who wants to get my ducks. Keep in mind, I've never trained a retreiver before, and I'm not sure I want to get too, too serious with this guy. He's a big dog at around 100lbs, the wife and kids are in love with him, and that's all I really care, but it sure would be nice if I could get him onto my birds.

Hi all,

I live in Fort Erie with my 11 month old lab, Mallard. I'm not into traditional dog hunting, but I have been studying to do falconry. I'm a member of the O.F.A.H and the Ontario Hawking Club. I haven't got my own bird yet but have been going out with fellow falconers the past few months.

My dog Mallard was a gift. I had not planned to hunt with her but I had an idea I could use her with a hawk when the time comes. A friend at my club said it is possible. She is whistle trained (but nothing pro, I had no one to show me the basic stuff so I have my own whistles for specific things I want her to do). I know it's probably not the right breed for the right sport, but that is okay with me. She is very intelligent and I think I can teach her to find rabbits and birds.

I have been reading some of the posts and they have been wonderful.

Welcome Sinker and Louise! welcomeani welcomeani

Sinker: I think there is a chance maybe, all depends. I am sure Quack can help you out.

Louise: I love Mallards name! How great, you are into falconery!! I would love to but, last time I checked there wasn't anyone here in my area. Plus I am now have committed the majority of my time to labs.

Both of you please enjoy!! Ask any question, there is a ton of knowledge here!!
