There Seems To Be Lots Of Talk These Days About The Amount Of Dogs Finishing Trials With Ribbons!! Let Me Get Straight To The Point,we Are Running A All Age Stake & We Have Made It Thru All 4 Series ,to Begin With I Got My Monies Worth Here!!now I Never Made It In A Placing For Points I Would Truly Hope I Know Why,in 99.9 Percent Of The Time I Know Why I Did Not Make The Top 2 Placings,3rd & 4th Well It Can Be Questionable Thats Why We Have Judges Right On Line With Every Dog Not Viewing From The Gallery!!now I Won,t Mention The Rcm,cause That Can Be A Heart Breaker, but The Green Ribbons , Really Are They Needed Except Maybe For New Competitors In The Game. Personally I Don,t Need A Green Ribbon To Tell Me How My Dog Did ,because.... I,ve Been At Trials Where They Were Handed Out To Dogs That Did Horrific Work & To Lump Them In With Dogs That Weren,t As Good As The Top 4 Placings But Did Did Some Reasonable Work, Sorry I Just Don,t See The Comparison Of The 2 Dogs Getting Greenies!! Thanks For Letting Me Get That Off My Chest Whew,
John

Sorry John, but I have to strongly disagree with you about the need for a certificate of merit and their meaning. I do not agree that cm's should be given to every dog that runs the last series - that is not their purpose. The purpose is to give them to dogs that have done acceptable work on all four series in relationship to the field.
If a cm is given to a dog that has failed the last series, it is a discredit to the dogs that were dropped in the first series for far less faults. But a dog that has completed the last series in an acceptable fashion has completed the trial and deserves recognition.
I am not talking about giving out ribbons to new junior or qualifying handlers with dogs that did not deserve them - to encourage them to stay in the game. I would think that is the worst thing to do to them if their dogs are not worthy. You would have better success in keeping them in the game by not giving them anything and telling them to save their money and stay home and train!
I am talking about giving cm's in all stakes to deserving dogs. They mean something to me as a competitor and as a judge.

Peter, Let Me Say I Agree With You Totally, On A Dog Finishing A Final Series In A Acceptable Fashion! But That Does Not Happen Enough From What I,ve Seen.then Again You Have Been A Judge & A Competitor A Lot Longer Than Myself.i Just Feel Sometimes This Ribbon Is Handed Out In Sympathy, not For The Merit It Is Meant For ! I Believe You Have Seen This Happen Also.this Post Was Not To Demean Judges Or Competitors ,it Was I Believe, To Recognize That A Ribbon Means Something , That You Don,t Just Hand Them Out Because You Finished A Trial. Unfortunately I Can,t See How You Can Have 4 Placings 1 Rcm & Then 6 Cms.i Guess I,m Missing Something Here!
Thanks ,john

I've judged Opens or Amateurs with 50-99 dogs. Had as many as 15-20 in the last series doing water marks. Some failed-some did a credible job but overall didn't place. They got CM's .

Why can't you see 7 cm's? Given that all showed they were well-trained dogs who did the work on that day without committing eliminating faults. Thus, they deserve a CM!

Generally, I'd say more than half of the final series dogs might get a CM if the test was well matched to the field. At the same time. perhaps only 1-2 might have done a super job.
If everybody did it==wrong level! If only one did it ==wrong level.

At least, that's my view as a competitor who judges and a judge who competes!

Dennis, Good Points Made As The Same As Peter,so I,m Sure I,ll Have To Look At This Merit Ribbon In A Different Perspective , As I Mentioned In Another Post ,ibelieve Judging Seminars Are Much Needed Here In Canada From The People That Have Been In The Game For Sometime Who Have Generated A Wealth Of Knowledge ! It Would Be Helpful To Myself And Others Who I Know Would Be Interested!!
