Question for everyone. Yesterday my dog's feet started to bleed after a bunch of time out in the cold running around in the snow. Of course the bleeding stopped when we came in. Is this common? has anyone else seen this happen. One person suggested treating this wit spray on bandage stuff. It sounds like a great idea. What has been the experience of others? Thanks

You will want to use something that won't hurt your dog when they lick it off, cause that's what's going to happen. We just used Vaseline on our girl's pads. Put it on 2 or 3 times a day for a while. The cold and snow dries out their feet and that's what causes the cracking.

I used something called Bag Balm and it seem to get rid of the big cracks. Mind you my dogs were bleeding you may need something more medicated.

I've heard of a product called "utter butter" that works, but have no personaly experience with it, or cracked pads. I'd say that EMT gel or spray may work, but on pads it's going to be a tough deal!

I've had problems with my dog getting cracks or splits on the skin between his toes this winter, not so much the pads themselves. They look like the cracks and splits some people get on their fingers in cold dry weather that seem to take along time to heal. I tried the Bag Balm and he just wants to lick it off. I also think it stings some on an open crack. Tried the Nexband spray on bandage and he immediately left his feet alone. I don't know if they'll heal faster but he's more comfortable and the skin is dry instead of wet and puffy from excessive licking.

I should clarify.. it is not on the pads that are cracked... it splits on the skin between his toes. I have noticed today when he goes outside he seems to be a little sensitive. He is fine walking around the house, it just seems to be when he goes out in the snow. Should I be worried?

really go get some "BagBalm" I say this be my dog licks everything and didn't seem to lick this off. Her pads were split quite deep at the tip right behind her nails.

After 2 applications the splits were almost gone.

So it's the perfect application for between your dogs toes and it's cheap 10bucks a can in my area :)

Hey city boys , Farmers have been using Bag Balm for years . Has no perfumes or harmful chemicals and keeps the cows udders free from sores , good for people too. Much better for people who have allergies to commercial hand creams. Just don't tell the company you are using it on dogs . They will immediately double the price.:icon1_lol:

I use vaseline if they get too cracked. I use it on his nose as well.

Usually once the snow gets a good thick crust on it I make him wear boots. He looks kinda goofy with them on but it saves him alot of pain from cut pads later. Keeps their feet warm as well. It took him a little while to get used to but now he doesnt mind them.

I've used polysporin with very good results.
