So, where else do we have trials/tests going for the pointy dog folk? BC? Manitoba? Ontario? Quebec? NewBrunswick? Anyone else?
What about other formats? Are there NAVHDA tests, NSTRA type trials, ABHA? What is going on in your part of the world.

Vindalbakken- In general, are there wranglers at any of those events to rent horses?
Vindalbakken
02-15-2008, 11:10 AM
Wranglers with horses to rent disappeared about 5 or 6 years ago. It got far too expensive for the clubs. There are enough members of the CKC clubs who have horses to ensure that judges and handlers have mounts. If you wish to run the AFTCA trials you better have arrangements for a horse before you get there. They have never had wranglers that I know of.

We still have wranglers with horses at our trials here in Alberta - although it is becoming too expensive...

Glad too hear there are mounts available. Do you know what the going rate would be?

My bad. Who is doing the wrangler service now? When I judged last year for Calgary there was no wrangler at the trial and there will be no wrangler at the Edmonton trial this spring. Club members supplied their personal horses for judges and handlers.

Not all the trials have had wranglers but a couple did in the last year or so. I have no idea how much it costs...

Not enough land to let a dog stretch its legs out there maybe?

Nope. No CKC trials out here for whatever reason. There are some AKC trials not too far away.

Jixer is there any NSTRA trials out there?
Maverick

No NSTRA trials in the area either. I believe there is a chapter in the Ottawa area that has a couple of trials every year.
My male brittany Maverick starts his trial season this weekend at the Susquehanna Brittany Clubs field trial along with one of the puppies from our last litter. This will be the first of the spring series for them.

We used to have several CKC pointing breed trials in Ontario but like so many things as memberships waned the work involved became too much for those who were left. Trials as you know are much more work than tests.
American Field/AFTCA /Region 13 is still very active in this area. 3 clubs run 4 trials in the spring and 4 trials in the fall under the OBDCA ( Ontario Bird Dog and Conservation Association) umbrella.
We also have the Ontario Walking Shooting Dog Championship ( one week) in the Spring which can attract 100 entries including many top American dogs. I'm hoping to participate in that this year. This includes a Derby and Open event.
In the fall the Canadian Open Championship attracts at least 100 entries and we also have the Ontario Open Shooting Dog Championship in the fall ( one week).

You guys have 3 Championship trials a year that are recognized by the Field? Is the Walking SD an AFTCA trial? Perhaps we could have a Region 14 Walking SD, an Alberta Walking SD and a Sask. Walking SD Dog out here. I will need to get organizing. Perhaps an Alberta Open Shooting Dog Champ as well.

Yes. 3 trials a year recognized by the field....... all under the AFTCA umbrella.
1 walking
1Canadian
1Ontario
go for it , just find out what you need director wise etc
Takes a year or 2 for the guys to get it on their regular circuit.
Americans love to come up.
We have a 40+ year rep so the win is a very big deal, big purse, trophy, big painted pic of your dog etc.
Each one is a week long with banquet etc.
We have one terrific grounds left.

The new kid in town.
The Irish Setter Club of Canada is holding a CKC licensed field trial on April 19/20. Only an hour from my house. Guess I will have to dust off a couple of dogs and go run.
How is a trial more work than a hunt test? I have never put on a hunt test, but for 5 years my wife and I ran a CKC horseback field trial. Then I turned it over to another fellow who ran it as a walking stake for two years by himself.

The Irish Setter club held a Field Test last August as well. I heard it wasnt the best grounds but now that Mike has a spot in the trial section I am pretty sure his girlfriend wont let this happen again.
I will have the demon at the trial we will see how well he does.

I can't decide whether to enter Loki or not... he is green broke (very green) and backing is still an issue. I guess I'll have to see how the spring training goes...

Sorry to confuse. The original schedule was for London to have their weekend in May. London was moved up to fill the Gordon Setter spot.

Lack of entries?
No one got any info about it.
Not to criticize you Jim, I know it's not your responsibility, but there are 120 names on the mailing list and if a mailing isn't done ........I have the mailing list if anyone wants it.

It was the London club's trial. Has nothing to do with me. I post the information that I know (Or think I know) and that is all I can do. I check http://americanfield.com/Pages/Fieldtrials.html to find out the dates of the trials. NOBODY has ever mailed me a premium list for a trial event.
Maybe next season, the schedule for all of the ODBCA trials could be mailed out to "the list" after the dates are finalled at the spring meeting?

I'm sorry to be critical and apologize. I'm just concerned about trialing in Ontario.
I wouldbe glad to do a mailing for the Woodstock or London Club anytime if I have the Premium list 2 weeks in advance. I know you don't have as many helping members as the other clubs.

I'm saving this post to remind myself to make sure the dates are sent out after the annual meeting in July. - Vince's job.
I can't believe you've never received a premium list in the mail. That's terrible.
E-mail your address to me and I'll make sure you get the Toronto Branch ones from now on.

I'd move in a minute if we didn't have 2 good jobs here and and aging parents to care for.
My brother is a fishing /big game guide on Vancouver Island It would be great to see more of him.
My sister lives in Hawaii. A trip to see her would be half the cost if I lived in Alberta.
My other brother was a RCMP officer in Alberta for 25 years.
We all love Alberta.

Well, I am back in the house already. The weather has wreaked havoc again with the Spring trial season and the Irish Setter Club of Canada Field Trial was cancelled this morning. The troops were gathered, the horses saddled and the birds put out for the first brace, but the weather continued to get worse and the temp. colder. Everyone waited it out till 9:00 but the resolve to continue weakened rather than strengthened as the wind, snow and cold took it's toll.
Talk of postponing was quashed quickly since there is a dog trial/test every weekend from now till June and then the Show Schedule starts for the Irish Setter members - so with no possibility of running today and no possibility of running another weekend the deal was called off.

Thats too bad. I got a phone call right as they were cancelling it saying dont bother coming up it was terrible. The highways were great but once you got onto the side roads you really needed a 4x4.
I hear of some talk about them doing an event in september but who knows.

We finally had a trial that wasn't cancelled. Turned into a summer day. lol Quite a change from a couple of weeks ago. During my walking brace, I was wondering If I would make it around. lol
Turned out to be a nice day with dogs, horses(especially my new filly) and friends. As always Toronto put on a class trial.
I managed a couple pics during an early brace before I started riding the filly (She's a two hander still).

Really nice pics. Thanks. I had agreat time too although I'm not walking too well to-day and thinking of a good reason why I can't go to work to-morrow.
I was really happy with my dog even though we didn't place. One of those ..... Brittanies with the short tails screwed up my dog's honor. LOL
