Well with 120+ entered here is the type of first series you would see. Here are some updates for everyone. I think there are some people from the board there and others from the board that have dogs there.
1st series Open is a quad, shot left to right: momma/poppa station at 250 yds to the left.....momma throws first, angle back left.....poppa throws second, angle back right.....flyer station, also located at about 250 and about 10 yds to the right of where the poppa bird lands, throws right....last bird down is about 10 yds from the running line to the right. Throw in some tall pines that the dogs have to run through, some terrain changes, and there you have it. Out of the first 6 dogs, 1 did it without picking up; out of the first 6 dogs to run, 5 were titled.
Started on dog 92
Here is another update
Through dog #8 (43 dogs), less than 5 had done it without handling or picking up, most doing the latter

Description of the 1st for the Am.
The Am is a triple with two retired. First bird down is almost in front of you throwing left to right in a ditch with lots of cover. Swing over to the right and WAY OUT in the field was the second mark, thrown right to left. Right in front of the line was the flyer station shooting right to left-bascialy wiped out the first bird and was a lot of suction when you sent for the long right retired. It also landed in heavy cover.
Most picked up the flyer, then tried the long right retired, and then the long middle. Also, were hay bales in the field which the two long guns retired behind and added an interesting element to the test.

The open test surprises me ( not really ). If you read the judges manual put out in the States, it frowns upon momma/poppa shot back to back. It suggests that one of the two birds be the go bird. To make matters worse they shoot the flyer out of order and a breaker bird. I guess Misty was correct - it was a cut throat test.
Any Canadian snowbirds still in?

Fairly accurate description of both series. I have some pics but not sure anyone in Canada should view these Peter. The Moma/poppa had 2 guns, each took about 5-6 steps away from the blind before throwing. The AOF for each bird was a dot hence dogs that were having a resonable hunt could certainly encompass more than one area. Most dogs were comfortable going back in for 2 birds-few if ANY would go in for 3.The Judges told me as we picked up last night the completion rate was 17-20%. They indeed brought back handles. Just think of 3 marks all thrown into a hat-that gives you a sense and to boot we had several breaks on the in you face bird.
The Amateur went from 107 to 48-they could have gone less. The poison bird-under the arc bird which started with a water entry,up on a dike ,cut another corner of water and swim by the poison bird was a killer as well as dogs had to go completely out of site into a heavy cover bowl where the flyer had been shot as well as skin by the left hand retired position.Luck played a huge part on where they came out and absolutely no chance to handle until you saw them again.
Tule will go to the last open series -don't know beyond that at this point.
To all our friends at home-DON'T GET ANY IDEAS!!

Here is a description I found for the Am water blind.
Open water blind is a "no seeum" entry past two pieces of water on land then cross four points to the bird. Not terribly long but TECH-NI-CAL.....

Great to see as he is a great - Canadian dog which shows that great in Canada is equal to great in US as a number of our great dogs have shown.
Perhaps, the AKC may finally do something with their huge numbers at this time of year. If all-age takes precedent, after a certain number of dogs, why not split the field, cancel a minor stake and replace it with another open?
But that is not our problem and we are fortunate that we do not have that problem in Canada.

Well I guess our Canadian group did fairly well - Kevin took 4th in open, 1st in Qual and 1st in derby. Ed's dog who runs our Ontario circuit is quite the animal and I expect good things from him this year - bred by Ron Malton with the help of Ted Gadawski.
Wonder why it is so hard to have consistent numbers in Ontario - try competing against Kevin, Chuck, Dave, Dan, etc and throw into the mix Dennis, and Yongloves who placed and jammed at the same Snowbird open. I expect 2008 to be one of the strongest fields we have seen in a long time.
It should be alot of fun running Ontario all-age with so many very strong dogs and well trained dogs this year - I am looking forward to running against and judging this field.
Peter.

Peter and others who aspire to run Open/Am this year in Ontario:
I don't think things will be any tougher this year or perhaps even as tough as the past!
Kevin is certainly acquiring some dogs that will threaten. Moose has been here and there in the past when run by Ed. Chuck's truck has lost a biggie or two and doesn't appear as strong as even a few years ago. Dan and Dave have a couple-three. The Youngloves have Emma bred. Cree may be a force but correction, they/he didn't place this weeeknd!. Me, I just have an old dog and a couple of youngers. Plus, isn't Arwen bred and also not a contender for awhile?
So, I don't think ANYBODY should be scared away. Besides, in many years I have found that in the Ontario circuit it is usually the test that beats you, not the competiton.
Something to consider?
Down here with a 100+ dogs that isn't often the case!!
Cheers
Dennis
PS. This weekend should be a easy go-we're down to just over a 100 in Open and only 90 in the Am. Piece of cake--EH!!
PPS. I refused to send pictures of last weekend. I wouldn't want anybody to get any ideas!!! BTW, The tornadoes passed us by today!!! (The things we have to endure down here!:spoton:

And we just keep getting snowed on up here -- sure wish I'd gone south as planned!!!!! Soon I hope to any way.
Seriously though it's interesting to hear Dennis's critique of what to expect this coming year in Ontario -- and imagine if we had over a 100 dogs in one stake at a FT :omg: :omg: :omg:
