You're going to get a sack full of responses in regards to various training information. The standard by which most are measured are Mike Lardy's Total Retriever series. They are expensive, but very good. After that there are various others that follow the same basic steps with little different approaches and various degrees of detail. They all pretty well follow the same program though. If you want a good hunting dog based one I would recommend "Retriever Training - A Back to Basic Approach" by Robert Milner, a DU book. He trains primarily for hunting although his concepts can be incorporated into hunt test or field trial. Search the archives and you will get alot of other authors as well. As for buying books I get all mine off of amazon.ca. Cheap, fast, and freebie shipping on orders over $40 I believe. Have fun.

Not a big fan of Mr. Milners but I do know people that like some of his stuff. The Lardy stuff is expensive but very good. If you feel that the DVD sets are too much money a very good and inexpensive way to get the info is to purchase the copys of his Retriever Journal articles. These sets are very resonably priced and are a wealth of infomation. The first set goes through his program step by step and lays it all out. Some of the articles in the other sets cover topics like training problems, line manners etc.

I would recommend "The 10 minute retriever" by Amy and John Dahl to start, ( http://www.amazon.ca/10-Minute-Retriever-Obedient-Enthusiastic-Minutes/dp/1572233036/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/701-5486599-4747565?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1176161665&sr=8-1 )
then "Smartwork for Retrievers" by Evan Graham (www.rushcreekpress.com), and as others have said Mike Lardy's video's.
Milners first book was ok for its time, but the I have to question "Back to Basics Approach" as it suggests that a dog that pops and cheats is smart dog and a dog that wants to work with you. However his chapters and dominance and wolf pack mentality were interesting.

Lardy/Smartworks all highly recommended -- if young pup get Sound Beginnings by Jackie Merten -- also The Working Retrievers by Tom Quinn (dated but still useful) -- also number of articles on Internet -- Dodds Training Center and John/Amy Dahl have libraries of articles -- many others such as on Working Retriever website -- also look at Retrievers ONLINE
