View Full Version : when to keep dogs out of the covert?
I am new to pointing dogs, but it would seem to me that there might be regulations around when dogs can not be let to run in coverts.
It would seem natural that regulations would be in place to allow breeding, nesting, and the young of the year to develop.
Can any one help me out?

First you need to say where you are from? In Ontario the rules are different than here in AB or over in BC.
:opps: it makes sense that rules would be regional.
I am in Ontario, and am concerned mostly with Durham, and Muskoka.
thanks. A.

Contact you local district MNR as there is a permit required to train your dog during the off hunting season. The permit will allow you to use quail, pheasants to train your dog, but will not allow you to shoot them. Your dog will not be allowed o catch them. You will be able to shoot rock pigeons (barnpigeons) and chukars during the training season. The MNR will advise you when you will be able to commence the training and this depends on your district. The permits are no charge.
I would like to suggst that you contact your local NAVHDA group as they do sponsor traing groups.
Thank you for the tip on both contacting the MNR and NAVHDA.
I will take advantage of both for training.
My question was more along the lines of when should I not take my pointer for off leash exercise in areas where I suspect game? I would not consider this training...but i suspect that it is informally training any time the dog gets an opportunity to encounter birds.
Is there a guideline or regulation for this purpose?

You should have control of your dog at all times. That being said if you can not control your dog you should avoid areas likely to have birds. This is essential duing the nesting and hatch to not disturb. Run you dog in an area that is unlikely to be the home of a game bird. If in doubt I would suggest you avoid the area. May and June are months to watchful.

Are you just looking for a decent place in Durham to run your dog off leash without getting in trouble?
