How far in advance do the tests usually fill up for Started dogs?
I am also wondering how people usually do this. Would you try to obtain your four passes for the "SHR" title in one season?

Speaking as the Hunt Secretary at the Luther Marsh HRC Hunt Tests over the past 4 years, we have never filled Started. I believe this is the way it is for most UKC/HRC clubs in Ontario. We accept entries up to and including the day of the Hunt Test. However there is no guarantee that this year may be different. When the club stated more than 13 years ago, it was quite normal that all levels filled up about a month prior.
These days (at least at Luther Marsh) we fill up early in Seasoned and Finished (about 2 to 4 weeks before).
Also, if you want your dog (and your) name to be published in the official programme, you should try to get your entry in about two weeks before as the clubs need time to get the programme together.
I should also mention that the procedure is different for CKC clubs. They have an official closing date that is usually 7 to 10 days before the test. They DO NOT accept entries after that time.
As for getting your SHR title (4 Started passes) in one year, it is very possible. It really depends on you and your dog - and how much travelling you want to do. In Ontario, there will be 8 tests this year (Essex (1), Kingston (1), Lake Ontario (2), Ottawa Valley (2), Luther Marsh (1), and Georgian Bay (1)). This should give you plenty of chances to earn 4 Started passes. Keep in mind, with UKC/HRC you can also run tests in the USA - and there are several clubs in Michigan and Pennsylvannia which are not too far.
As for "how to enter" - Hunt Secretaries (myself included) like to get your paperwork as soon as possible. I have entered tests by e-mailing the information first, and then follow it up with snail-mail and a cheque. If it gets too close to the test day, (say within a week) you should probably contact the Hunt Secretary and they will direct you on how to proceed. Most will still want your information, but they may tell you not to mail a cheque as they may not get it in time. They may tell you to pay when you arrive.
Another tip about UKC/HRC entries - you can use your own form which you can e-mail or print. Just make sure it has ALL the information on it - the most important is your HRC number and your dog's UKC registration number. If you want, I would be more than happy to send you the one I use. It sure saves time in writing out every entry for every test!! Just send me an e-mail at: huntlmhrc@quickclic.net.

Good responce Randy, coming from another hunt test secretary the biggest issue is the paperwork. The earlier you get the premiums or information the sooner you can get them entered.
Most clubs will take as many started entries as they can get due to the fact that you can run a lot of started dogs through your tests in a short amount of time. You could run 25-30 started dogs through land and water and still be back at HQ before a 15-20 dog flight of finished.
Our club usually fills up in finished fairly early and we alomst fill seasoned.
Just an FYI for everyone as well that our club has decided to only run 1 flight of finished again this year and no the 2 flights I have in a previous post. We will be capping the flight at 20 dogs, I think we already have 8 spots filled. If we fill up early enough we may add the flight again.

Here is a copy of a blank entry that I use to send out entries via e-mail or in the mail.
I usually send the e-mail and follow the e-mail up with a cheque in the mail.
I fill them out for each dog and then just change to club info at the top and send it off.
