I was talking to a guy the other day that told me that he went to the Ottawa area a few years ago and hunted Hungarian Partridge? He told me that they put up a covey a day. Just curious if any of the locals from the Ottawa area can comment if there is a huntable population? I wouldn't mind getting the pup on some Huns before my trip out west.

I've never seen huge populations of huns... sure I'll put up 2-3 a day during deer drives, but never seen enough to want to hunt em. At least east of Ottawa. I've seen more driving down the road than hunting.

The ice storm 10 years ago hit them hard and the habitat loss didn't help. The season for huns and bobwhites should have been closed years ago IMO.

Three hunters I know have been going to Ottawa on opening for huns the last 4 years. They use to go there in the 70's hun glory days, and I believe go as much for nostalgia as to give the dogs some early season work. Anyway, over the course of 2 or 3 days they get anywhere from 7 to 12 huns, except last year they got shut out...zero! They hunted hard and didn't even so much as see a covey.

I grew up south of Ottawa and we used to see them pretty frequently. We never hunted them though.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm already getting excited and we are still 3.5 months away till hunting season. I guess I will stick to hunting huns out west and keep training the pup on chuckers this summer. I have alot of work ahead of me this year with this pup but I want to take it nice and slow and not rush things with him.

The closing of the hun season is sad indeed. A few years ago I had a discussion with my old friend, the noted Canadian outdoor sports writer Bill McClure, and he told me that the hun hunting in the Ottawa valley 30 years ago was probably as good as anywhere in the world. So good, that a lot of pro dog trainers would bring their strings for summer training on wild birds.

To all that love the Huns there making a comeback. Went to Winchester for some training and found over twenty pairs in march. That looks like a great outlook to me. Lets hope we don't get another ice storm!

this is an old thread but thought I would add to it.

I live south west of Ottawa in Kemptville, and pushed a few coveys of Huns around all summer and fall with the young dog (<1yr). He actually had is first point on wild birds over a covey of 15-20 huns just before the 2009 season opened.

Great to here that they are making a slow comeback.

Thanks for the update
