I just wanted to say "EXTREME THANKS" to Quack (Al).

He did not stop all day - was planting birds, ran his dog, AND took these great pictures.

If every club had members like this, it would make things a whole lot easier.

Thanks again!!

I second Randys reply. The day was a huge success with the weather cooperating and the birds flushing. I can't say enough about the efforts that Randy and Gerry put into making this work. These guys worked your tail off to get ready for Saturday and then turned around and repeated it on Sunday at the Luther Marsh HRC training day over at Valens. So much for a relaxing weekend!!! Thanks to Jeff Flanagan who coordinated the setup of the Sunday training day and to the many "grunts" who sacrificed their day to put on a barn burner of a day.

:nice work: I've got to give a big kudos to the club for putting on a great test day. I had fun at my very first HRC event, despite that fluffy dog of mine being unable to control himself when faced with a crumpling-in-the-air chukar, or my incident with the flaming popper. Who knew that "Holy S--t!" sounds so like Winter's release!!!
We'll be trying this again--after I have played with my dog's brain with a whole field full of flushing birds and a little, umm, electronic work on control!

Geez Shelly - in that first test I thought they were going to make you walk to London! In the second test, I thought you guys had it in the bag until that last bird!!

Ha Ha! The failure in the first test was easier to take than the second. The birds just weren't co-operating, and dems da breaks. But the second one, when he was seconds from passing...that one hurt!!!

Looks like a great turn out. Good pictures.
Now I have to ask what is expected at an Upland test in HRC?
How is the test run and is there different levels for different age dogs?
Congrats to all who participated and had a good day out with the dogs and friends.

This is a test for all retriever breeds. There is no segregation for age or type of dog. All breeds and ages run the same test.

The test is run on a single standard for all dogs - very simply, the judges will be looking for:

1. Walk-up with honour - two dogs and two handlers walk-up with dogs at heel - a (dead) bird will be thrown from a winger and both handlers will shoot at it. Dogs should be steady and sit on "flush" and shot. One dog will be asked to retrieve the bird while the other dog must honour.

One dog will return to the blind and the other will carry on to the "live" bird test. This "working dog" is expected to:

1. Quartering within range - is the dog hunting and working with the handler as a team.

2. Sit on the Flush - whistle and/or voice command can be used.

3. Steady to Shot - handler will fire a "popper" load and the dog should remain steady. Two live gunners will also shoot and attempt to kill the live bird. Dog should remain steady through all this shooting.

4. Retrieve - if the bird is taken by the live shooters, the working dog is expected to make the retrieve. If the bird is not taken, no retrieve is required.

The live bird flush and shot is repeated a second time.

The judges are really looking for the steadiness of the dog on the flush and shot.

That is basically the test (without going into too much detail).

We were able to put through 20 handler/dogs in the morning (one test), and we had another 19 handlers in the afternoon (second separate test).

Each test that is passed, the handler/dog earns a ribbon and points toward a title. Pass four of these tests and you earn the "Upland Hunter" (UH) title on your dog.

Thanks HRC,

I think I saw a test similar to that on TV a few years back.
Sounds like a great day out with the dogs.
