Go buy a bumper, white, they're 6-7$ each, get the dog really excited using a baby voice, and then toss it close by, the dog SHOULD run out and grab the bumper, likely not return it, but should pick it up..
If that doesn't work, try attaching a duck wing to an old fishing rod, and get the pup to chase it let it catch the wing once in a while...
All you can really do is get the dog excited about playing, and in the end retrieving if it still wants nothing to do with it, you'd be farther along replacing the pup...
If you want to keep it, there no such thing as a desire drill, and you don't want to have to force your pup on every retrieve, and you'll get frustrated quickly. Keep it as a pet, and get another dog... Preferably black, since they're genetically superior!!:fencing:

Try teasing him with a dead pigeon......and then toss it out there.
He won't be able to resist that.....its like waving a piece of pizza in front of your face!! :pizza:

If you have access to a live pigeon get one and put it in a knee high nylon sock, make a slit for one wing to protrude and tie the open end. let it go on the lawn and let pup chase it . the knee high keeps the pup from getting scratched or pecked. I also know trainers who put a live pigeon in the pups pen.
With desire we say you can take it out of a pup but you can't put it in.

I remember there was a time when I doubted if one of mine had enough desire to even be a decent hunting dog. So I did what Anna suggested with the live pigeon, and it was like a magical switch turned on. It truly was amazing to see the difference. Now of course, my biggest battle with that dog is steadiness.

He's a good lookin pup. He'll come around. From your earlier posts and describing how timid he is and what I saw today he'll be just fine. There are so many people to help out at LOHRC and on this site as well you'll have him going in no time.
just chessies

You can not put an old head on young shoulders, take your time and let the pup bond with you. I had a pup like that once, I would throw a few bumpers for him and if he lost interest and wanted to explore I would quit training and let him do it,after a time he started to look forward to retrieving and being with me. Take your time

I might swap the one that helped the hound eat a goose and then throw feathers and bones up all over the place. That hound can create more havoc than all 7 of the labs put together. Not really sure how she got the goose. May have hit the wires or been hit by a car or the owls or coyotes got it but Molly managed to hide it. I think we have it all picked up now. Made for some interesting training yesterday as the dogs had to run passed all the scent patches.
