View Full Version : Miniature Daschund?

In a vain attempt to emasculate me, my wife wants me to bond with a lap dog.
I have convinced her that all hounds are untrainable.
So she's considering a Miniature Daschund. (It will be the first daschund to win the sportsmans show)
Anybody know anything about this breed?
Health concerns?
Breed lines? re Show vs Field?

Thanks

I had a Mini Dachsund as a long term foster. My older sister (who is not a dog person if you catch my drift) also owns two of the little suckers. My experience with wieners is based on these three dogs and the research I did while I fostered the one.

They are fairly hard to housetrain - not because of brain issues, in my opinion, but because they are not really into being outdoors. Winter was a really big problem. The issue was compounded in the dog I had because she had spent the first 5 years of her life in a puppymill. All three of these dogs were very, very bonded to their families and were great guard dogs. They come with a surprisingly big bark and aren't afraid to enforce it. They are also fairly robust for a little dog and my foster pup lived comfortably underfoot of three clumsy labs without getting squashed - mind you they did learn to watch out for her or she'd let them have it.

As far as health concerns go - back problems are the big one. I don't know if there is a big show vs field split because I really don't see very many people at all doing the go-to-ground stuff with their MD's. But to maximize your odds at health, trainability and longevity select a breeder who actively trains for something physical.... they are going to be the ones who select against serious back problems, etc, and look for the regular health certs like CERF, OFA, etc.

If your wife is serious about getting a small dog, make sure she is willing to do some training with it as well. The biggest mistake people make with small dogs is that they just pick them up when they are being bad, instead of training them to be good! (This is my sister's MO <sigh>)

Overall, little wieners are a lot more tolerable than some other little dogs out there.... plus you get to call them little wieners.

Scott, I do not know anything about the breed, but I do know alittle about wives in field trialer homes. With what they put up with for our hobby, I would give her a minature poney if that is what she wanted.

Check on hip problems with a breeder and good luck. Which colour is smarter - brown, black or spotted. Remember Scott do your homework! Forget it - close your eyes, pick a pup and make the lady happy - you are lucky to have her!

Taking a 40 year anniversary cruise next weekend and I am scared of water!

Scott

I know that both Sandi Bond and Shirley Greener have very nice long haired Mini Dashunds. I think Shirley even shows...obedience trials and maybe breeds them. Give them a call.

Go find a teckel and you will never lose another deer or moose in your life. Great trackers and a total lapdog in the house.

I saw Shirley Greener handler her long haired miniature dachshund in an Obedience trial last winter - if you're as good a trainer as Shirley, they definitely are trainable - kinda cute too.

I took the liberty of finding you your new Avatar...

If you are worried about cold look at a wirehaired one, my buddy's wife has her second smooth one, Low Rider, and they not found of real cold weather. If they don't come when you call at least you can run them down. I know of one fellow that uses his with the hawk to flush game for the bird. And like PPinQC stated they are used for tracking and some are still used to go to ground on game. One last thing when they look in the mirror they see a Rottweiler.

OKAY, It's confession time. My very first dog ever was a Dachshund. I have pictures of Fritz and me when I was as high as he was long!

A first dog is always unforgettable but one has to learn from history!! Heck I even had a chocolate once-went on to be a NAFTCH FTCH AFTCH. Now there's a real :worms:

CONCLUSION? If a Dachshund can start me on the road I've travelled and if a Chocolate can win me my first National, then any dog could have merits!!

Cheers

Labber,
I just recieved this email from a friend located in niagara. Thought of you right away...hope we can find this little fella a good home. Contact me if you need more information.

Hi ! I need a favor

Our neighbor has a puppy he's giving away (FREE). It's a Dachshund, it's house broken, and it's great with kids.

He's giving it away because his wife says the dog 'stares' at her when she is undressing, and that gives her the heebie jeebies. I think she is just weird!

If you're interested, or know someone who is, let me know. Here's a picture of the dog (see below).

Thanks

I was thinking of Drew and the time spent to deliver 12 normal pups. I have heard with a weiner dog it goes by 15 minutes per inch so how long would it take to have 12 Scott?

Just be careful with you new found weiner. If you play with him too much you might end up blind.

Scott, love the picture.... if you need a home for him, just give me a call. I love the colour.
Jim, I don't mind you making fun of Scott's weiner, but lay off the yellow jokes. Now that you are out of that puppy stake, you will be seeing alot of the tail end of the yellow dogs, coming home with the birds that those black dogs can't find!
Can't hardly wait for 2009!
