Well another year of turkey hunting has started and thankfully mine started out with a bang ( litterly)

This had to be the easiest turkey hunt I have ever had, got to my spot nice and early ( by 5 am ) and waited patiently for the sun to rise. As soon as the sun started to rise the Gobble's started but none were anywhere near me. Instead of calling I decided to give them a bit longer before I called.

About 6:10 I heard one gobble about 100 yards in front of me and he was still in the tree. I let one simple tree yelp out and he hit the ground running. He made one gobble on the ground and that was it, the rest of the time he was on a full on run straight into my decoy's.

I was back in my truck by 6:32 and on my way home.....

I was out this morning to... archery hunting though.. I got a gobbler within 40 yards the hens were closer and I probably should have stopped calling.. I think the hens made me... and they all took off.. this was my first time turkey hunting and though I might not have got one....man it was awesome. I will try again on friday morning...hopefully then

I have a week or so before I can go out for the first time. Luckily it's on private property and there is only one other guy that can hunt it.

Question about your setup drew... do you have a blind or do you just sit by a tree?? I am taking the sit against a tree approach. Though I am not sure how I am gonna get a shot off with the bow. I have my dec about 12- 15 yards away facing me in hopes that the gobbler will come and face away from me towards the decoy, that will give me time to draw.. but what about other hens... if they are facing me.. they will give me away no???

I am fortunate as well Verno. I am on private property and I am the only guy I believe that hunts it in the spring. the wooded area does however span a couple of different properties... I hope that no one else gets chance at the bird I saw today.. he was big

I am going to start with the sit by a tree routine. But if that doesnt work I have small blind made up of burlap on some sharpened broomsticks. Pretty basic stuff and I don't know how it will work. If you are the only guy hunting that property, maybe make one and see if you can leave it set up so the birds get used to it

Hey,

I have done the achery approach with turkey's and it is not my cup of tea so I am using the 12 g

As for my set up I am just leaning up to a tree, my decoy is usually 10-15 yards away but I put it sideways to me so I can see the whole decoy. I don't know if this is right or wrong but it worked today.

As for calling I only called twice, once when he was in the tree and once when he was about 60 yards away from me.

Well I must say this has been the best turkey hunt ever for me !!!!! woohoo
I will keep the story short for now since it is late but after an excitting morning I decided to head back out this afternoon and see if I could get one going. As soon as I set up my bobblehead hen I heard a tom annswer to a crow a long way off in the distance.
After 45 mins of calling back and forth with this tom and calling him across some huge gullies he made his way into my set up.......

That's a freakin monster bird! Double beard, and coat hangers! Beauty...

I was under the impression that you were not allowed to shoot two birds in the same day, has this been changed?

Drew,

I'm sure this was an honest mistake, so I checked it out... According to http://publicdocs.mnr.gov.on.ca/View.asp?Document_ID=10689&Attachment_ID=20512

Bag Limit
1 bearded wild turkey per licence
2 licences perhunter maximum.
The two birds may not be taken on the same day.

Don't want anyone getting in trouble!

Hey Drew,

Ah, that explains it!! I guess this line "will keep the story short for now since it is late but after an exciting morning I decided to head back out this afternoon and see if I could get one going." got me confused... I "may" have skimmed through it ;) We're all picture whores after ll!

I am still waiting to get a bird in close enough.... 4 times out... 3 times I have seen hens and a Tom.. can't get the dang bird to come in close enough. Frustrating.. but what a great spot I have.

had been sitting out for about an hour and a half. I was about to give up. I let out one more yelp with the mouth call and was interrupted by a gobbler…. Really close 40 yards. I could not see him however, but he had snuck right in on me silently. Up till this point, I had heard nothing. This is my dilemma. I am sitting up against a tree with a bird coming right towards me. How do I draw and get a sight on him with out him bailing out? My thought is that when I had heard him I should have drawn, he did not see me at that point. If I had drawn and just waited him out, I would have had a shot… he came into to about 15- 20 yards of me. My dec was not even seen by him because it was out of his line of sight off to my right. I guess he lost interest and decided to go elsewhere. He did not see me that is for sure, even though I was in plain site. I had on my full camo and did not move. I was disappointed at this point. So I started to call again to try and get him to come back. The effect was not what I intended. Instead of him coming back, 3 jakes and 2 or 3 hens came in from my left and right and behind me. They were within 3 yards. Again in hindsight, I should have drawn the minute I first heard them I guess. 2 jakes walked right in front of me, and when they had walked away a little I clucked and one of them came back again. None of them seemed interested in my dec. My heart was just thumping at this point. I would have waited longer… but 7:00 approached and legal hunting time ended. What an unbelievable experience. I still have not even taken a shot, but I love turkey hunting. It is awesome simply to have wild animals that close. Evening hunts are going to be something I do more of. Anyway, I just thought I should let you know my most recent success. The property I have been hunting has been productive in terms of seeing and hearing birds. On 5 trip out there, I have seen and heard birds 4 of 5 times. Pretty cool huh??

By the way that Tom I saw… he is easily 25 or 26 pounds I would guess.

Well I have seen and heard lots of turkeys. I have been within 4 yards of shootable birds. I am a rookie bow hunter and I should have drawn when I heard not saw those birds.... I have yet to get one. Only a week and a bit left. I am starting to think that I will NOT get one this year. I am so disappointed. Time to wallow in a drink:darkbeer:   :boo: :2:
