View Full Version : Different Hunt
Talking with a guy at work who is heading to Florida for a family vacation. He has the chance to go on a hog hunt and is going to do it. The thing was that according to the outfitter he could hunt them with a rifle, hand gun, bow, OR spear, OR a knife. He said the outfitter was serious about the weapons of choice. He said he saw a video clip of the spear hunt. The guy was standing on the ground and the dogs pushed the hog to him and he starts chasing it all over the place. He gets the hog too. Don't think I'd like to tangle with no wild hog with a spear or knife. I tried to talk him into wearing nothing but a loin cloth and taking a hog with a knife Tarzan style, but he though he'd just use a rifle. Wonder about them southern boys some times.........

I seen the same type of hunt for a bear!! They sat in a treestand with a very long spear directly over a bait site. I am not the type to judge usually but I found this a little barbaric and completely needless.
Maybe I have too much respect for wildlife I don't know but I do know that I could never bring myself to do something like that.

I saw a video a few years ago where guys hunted them with dogs and a knife. They had a group of dogs that found a boar and held it bay, then other types of pitbull type dogs moved in and grabbed the boar and held it while the hunter got on its back and slit its throat. The dogs wore all kinds of leather armour to keep them safe.
Not really my cup of tea.
I think I saw the tree stand bear with a spear hunt too. If I remember correctly the spear was huge. Would never have been able to throw it. It got quite a bit of flack, deservedly so. As for the knife hunt, lots of fun with armoured pit bulls flying around while you ride a big tusk'r fightin' for it's life. Nope.......not me.

OH! I know those dogs they are Dogos from Argentina!! Fearless they are, we looked into one when we wanted a security dog. Very nice!
I DO NOT like the idea of hunting wild boar/bear with any dog.

Those are cut collars and vests to protect the dogs.
I have seen the vids and sometimes the hunter gets it as well. The one thing about the knife is that you know the hog is finished and not running off wounded after a bad shot. Pigs have a tough plate and you need too make a good shot to drop them.

These dog's are a regal breed, I've owned and co-owned 5 of them, and they are pretty amazing animals. Raw power and yet gentle giants....if I had room ; ) I'd have at least one at the house, they are impressive...Kass wouldn't mind one in the house when I'm away.
I have not participated on the hunt, but we hope to one day make the trip to Argentina, where you can participate in the culture and hunt these dog's were created for.
Best Regards,

As hunters, I strongly believe we need to support all aspects of hunting, wether we agree with it or not. If that's the way they chose to hunt, then let em have fun.

I agree Frank! I will support them, I just don't care for it. We have to think back to before guns and such, that is the way hunting was done.
Those dogs wear kevlar vest. Supposedly the boars can't rip it. I do not know.
Wayne: You lucky guy if you get a chance to go to Argentina to hunt with original Dogos. I firmly believe that here in the US we take a good thing and mess it up. There is a huge difference in Dogos here than in Argentina.

You are mostly right, however there are some breedres staying true and producing rustic lines.
Our dog's were out of Texas, and two out of Italy...2 more were rescues of North American "pet dogo" type...they were still beautiful dogs, and a different type of animal. Not for an average and little time to spend with owner.
A very interesting breed.

Wayne: I agree 110%, they are not for the average dog owner. Wonderful dogs!! I believe there are a few "true to" breeders in Fla. I am not sure though.

There are boys that use them or cross them to use on hogs down south.
