Took this unusual self-portrait last week before the snowmelt. There was a foot of snow on top of foot of grass so it was thigh-deep with a crust strong enough for every animal except for Ruby and I. The pheasants just jogged away laughing as we slogged along sweating...

It's tough hunting when the snow is that deep and alot of hard work is needed. We put up two grouse in over a foot of snow up north on Saturday. My buddies brittany pointed one of them in the swamp and the other busted wild 80 yards in front of me and the pup. If it wasn't for the pup I basically would be done hunting but my little guy has some much energy and if he doesn't burn it off he becomes a problem at home. However it takes alot of will power and sweat to walk through that much snow that you were in!

Be very careful about going out if there's crust on the snow. It can tear a dog's tendon easily, which is a big problem to get healed.
STAY away from any ponds. Every year a dog is lost through the ice that "looked" frozen.

Nice pic.

I work my dogs all winter unless there's a crust. The deep snow is great for conditioning and helps me to lose some pounds. :) I just bought some snowshoes from the LL Bean catalogue.

Thanks for the warning about the crust/tendons - I've never heard that before. Do you know what tendon tends to be affected? Even notwithstanding tendon concerns, I won't be going out in those conditions again - it was pretty much hopeless hunting! We definitely have very strict rules about ice/ponds!

You get an icy crust and most good hound guys don't run for the same reason, injuring the dog badly.
