Just wondering where you trial guys got your dogs from? We are going to add another dog to our house this fall or next spring and I have decided to buy a trial dog. I have been looking at a few kennels on the other sid eof the border and like what I see down there. Maybe I can find somthing comparable up here in Canukada.
I am looking once again at a GSP or maybe an English Pointer. I live up here in Grande Prairie and we do mostly waterfowl but am getting into grouse. I still make a few trips south to my old stomping ground after ditch parrots and huns so I have to keep that in mind when looking for a trials dog.
I am looking hard at dogs from Rawhides clown lines, I also really like DC/AFC / 3x NSTRA CH Gamble's Odyssey Fritz MH RD VCX NAVHDA UT Prize II, the last dogs I am looking at come from Wildrose Outfitters.
For pointers I am pretty set on an Elhew bred dog maybe Gaurdrail.
I will mostly be participating in CKC and AF sanctioned events.
Any help or input would be appreciated.

What range are you looking for in the dog? Medium 200+ yards or a breakaway pointer,600+. I was considering a huge running Miller dog but might want my first pointer to be a little closer working, max 500- 600 yards. Elhew usually is a closer working dog from my understanding, foot hunting range, not horseback like some other lines. And how much waterfowl as opposed to upland will you be doing? I know there are some really good EP's that retrieve but generally you may have to work at that more especially if you do a lot of duck hunting.

I do alot of duck and goose hunting but 90 percent of it is field the rest is shallow small sloughs. I ask my dog to retrieve all game I shoot so retrieving is going to be a big part of their lives.
Looking for somthing in the 300-500 on the open prairies shortens up when we get into the thick.
My GSP now will cast out 300yrds and I would really like somthing bigger.

I'm friends with the fellow who took over Gene Casale's Guardrail kennel. Could give you his name if you're interested - Kansas.
Talk to Vindalbakken on here as he is very familiar with pointer breeders in your area.

Yes Sharon I am interested.
Rick and Bredna Row are doing a breeding I am really interested in. Will probably look at a pointer if that doesnt work out.

GSP - there is no one in Canada breeding the type of GSP you may be looking for. The most trial proven GSP's in Canada are in your backyard, since there are not trials where GSP's are run in any other part of the country. If you do not want Dunfur blood then you will have to look to some of the other bloodlines in the US. The most impressive GSP's I have ever seen and judged ran under the Snake River prefix which was from either Wash. or Idaho - not sure which and I don't know if they are still breeding or how they are doing, but that is where I would start if I was to get into GSP's.
Pointers - take the time to go to some of the Region 14 trials in Sask. Doug Vaughn (was in Saskatoon) produces some awesome pointers under the Shadow Cruiser prefix and Ron Bender (somewhere east of Regina) runs and breeds pure bird dogs that have power and style. They can compete with anything that moves anywhere.
If you are at all interested in Setters, talk to Sean Kelly from Cardston. He breeds under the Hemeruka prefix. I once owned a setter from him. There are very few Setters that are truly competitive in the Prairie All Age venue, and Sean has bred and owned more than a couple of them.

I was remiss. If puphood1 is breeding he can sure hook you up with a Pointer that can get the job done as well.

Hey Ryan, you still watching this? RJ Marquart just posted some adult dogs for sale on an e-mail list. You might want to contact him and see what they are. He is a top notch trainer and knows his dogs. Quicksilver Kennel is his outfit.

Who said anythig about putting him out to pasture. Hunting only gets better when you got 2 dogs lighting it up in the field. A lab did cross my mind for the amount of duck hunting we are doing up here, but I do alot more upland and games in the spring to buy a lab.
Sharon thats a nice little pup. Good lines to it Damascus was a good dog and seems to be consistant with anything they bred him to. I think Pinehill has 1 more straw left. I talked to our friend with the Pointers and he is trying to talk me into a Gaurdrail dog. Gave me hell for not being ready now. He has a couple really nice Gaurdrail/Elhew breeding that he thinks would be perfect.
Ya Scott I am still watching it. Been stuck up in camp for a few days so I am in and out. I will get in contact with him thanks. I totally forgot about puphood probably would be a bad idea either.

No he doesnt. The litters are actually on his site. the 2 elhew girls at the bottom of his litters page. I just got off the phone with Numark kennels. Very nice couple who has a direct son of Elhew Snakefoot they would sell me. 7month old white/lemon. He also told me what he has in his secret stash of frozen semen. Lets just say it would make any pointer breeder drool.
