I was on RTF, and seen this post...

Congrats to Howard Simson and new AFTCH FC L&L's Black Tie Affair -- Tie is now an Amateur Field Trial Champion in Canada as a result of Amateur finish at SWORTC FT -- also congrats to Flint River Kennels and Kevin Cheff -- and to breeder Lee W.

Is that the same Lee W that is on this site? If so, that's excellent! and congrats on a very successful breeding!

Actually that's not only the same Lee W but also the same Howard who both post here occasionally -- see other thread in Field Trials section -- and thanks for using my post from RTF to let more folks know about Howard and Tie

Frank there is TONS of dog games to play and compeat in around Ottawa u just have to get out and meet the people who are playing the games but all i read and hear u say is that U cant come its to far U dont have time i think the reason U cant see dogs is U dont make the time for dogs All the people u read about in the post i know and i bet u never hear them say that its to far to train those people have spent more time on dogs then most people in canada. U can always start a club where u live in the east end.then u might see how much work it is to host a event the people who put dog events dont need to read crap like this get out a train TIM

Hey Tim,

I've looked at the CKC, and the UKC as well as the Event calendar here, and this is what I've come up with...

Kingston HRC 1Days
Ottawa HRC 2 Days
Clayton CKC 2Days
Westport CKC 2Days

I have not received a reply regarding any hunttests as Ducross' this year.

I don't plan on running any FT, but have viewed a couple... Looked at a couple marks at Ducross' this week-end. Some Quebec club was there, and no one seemed to look at me like I had two heads.

Lake Champlain has a 2 day hunt as well just across the boarder in Vermont in June that wouldn't be that far a drive for you.

hey Kev,

Yeah, I'll likely be attending, but Tim said right around Ottawa, if 3-4 hours is considered right around Ottawa, I may aswell drive to Toronto. Just want to know if there are any more events in the immediate area...

Tim is right. This game is what you make it. I'm not sure of your situation but I do know that we all have to make some sacrifices and hard decisions when it come to our hobby. My sister and I sit down in the Spring and decide which trials and hunts we want to do. One year we decided we wanted to do the Northern circuit Kapiskasing, Timmons and then North Bay. We made this our holiday. The dogs loved staying at the Comfort Inn.
If you are near Mike Ducross' you have a terriffic training ground there. Get to know the people. You are going to have to do some travelling no matter which hunts you pursue (CKC or UKC ) but in the Ottawa KIngston area you have 2 HRC clubs, the Eastern Ontario Lab Breeders, the Chesepeake Bay group, and the group a Brighton. You will just have to keep seeking them out.
I own 120 acres with ponds but we travel to different training areas, the dogs need different pictures all the time. This weekend we trained in 3 separate locations. Nothing is more fun than to get with a group of people that share your interest and are encouraging. We decided that not one of our dogs would have brought home even a greenie but boy we enjoyed ourselves. My husband says that if the Devil himself knocked on the door and said do you want to train you know where I would be. Finds some training budies hunt testers or field trialers, we train with both and they are good people.
Have you joined a club?

Well said Anna -- you need to get out and train your dogs -- there are all sorts of opportunities in Ottawa area -- if you're close to Maxville then check out HT seminar with Carol Cassidity at end of June -- highly recommended

By the way Anna if you truly are willing to train with the "devil", does that mean I can bring over my terror (my BLM Maxx) when I bring him home later in the summer -- we'll be up there most every weekend (until we make final move up -- probably next year) not very far from the farm (at Cawaja Beach)

I currently train with a retired field trailer, we train every sunday, as well as the odd time on weekends, and during the week. It's on his property, so we're only 3 guys and 3 dogs. I have to say that I feel Tim's post was fairly inappropriate... This is my first dog, and this will be my first season, so I'm learning, and for him to make me feel so welcome to his club, makes me feel like crap. I will try to join the Kingston HRC club, if they will have me, but otherwise don't know of any other clubs in the area. If my enthusiasm to get out an have fun ruffled Tim's feathers I appologize, but the seasons start later here than up there, so I feel my comments were justified. I've been to 3 HT's (CKC) and 3 FT's, as well as the Golden Whistle, all in the first year, and as a spectator...

Ducksoup, I've already spoken with Pam about the seminar... I rally don't know why Tim felt it necessary to bash me in public, and would have prefered a PM if he felt it was necessary.

Actualy in case anyone cares, Tom Glen is who I train with... This page has the info about him, and many golden folk should have an idea of his Cedarpond kennel name.

Tom Glen is a very good trainer -- remember him running a really good Golden named Brasdor's Razzl Dazzl -- was owned by Dave Rutherford and trained by Dan DeVos as Junior dog (top Junior in Ontario and 2nd in Canada), then sold to Tom just before turned 2 -- ended up FTCH and NAFTCH -- not shabby at all -- while with Tom trained by Dave Thompson and then Jamie Balesdent -- so Frank you've got a really good source of training knowledge -- as for any comments from me they were meant simply in support of Anna Scott's words -- Anna has played in both FTs and HTs for a number of years and speaks from experience -- I think all that Anna or I were saying is that there are many fine training groups as well as clubs all over Ontario and that by getting involved with any one you'll find a really great resource for info and support as you progress with your dog in training and/or chosen retriever sport -- and Frank it seems you already have such a training partner to learn from in Tom -- as for anybody else's comments I can't speak for as people can say all sorts of things on a public forum such as this -- usually for reasons known only to them -- any way Frank the point Anna and like-minded others were saying is that there are many many people out there very willing to help somebody starting out -- we all had to start somewhere so join in whether as a training group or a club or simply as a pair of training partners

I appreciate your support, and couldn't agree more with Anna, or yourself... I'm just not sure where the comment came from, and I don't want anyone thinking bad of me before I even begin... It's rather hard on the morale... If my enthusiasm made me seem ungrateful, or disrespectful, that was not the intent. I'm 26, married 1 year ago June 16, and have a house, two cars yadda yadda, so money is pretty tight, and I want to keep it close to home so I can avoid hotel costs if possible...

I've found it difficult finding CKC events to run, but from talking to people I've been able to get that all straightened out. Anyone whose spent time looking at the CKC website looking for premiums can confirm it's a waste of time! The UKC on the other hand is incredibly well run. Also since I'm very close to Quebec, I'm trying to find a source for premiums out that way... It's closer to Quebec City than Toronto, and much nice country! ;)

Pam Hiscoke has been very kind, and very generous with her support as well, and I look forward to meeting her in the field!

Frank you have a great training partner with Tom. We train with a group of field trialers and they bring a wealth of experience with them. I apologize if I sounded cranky but I'm beat after the weekend. Larry Hare is with the Kingston club and he is a great guy. if that club is closest to you by all means get in touch with them. We have a couple of members that are about an hours drive from us. We try to get up their way to train once in a while or find a place half way between.I agreee with you about the CKC right now they are on my sh#@ list. The service they provide is the pits and I have been a member for years.
You are doing lots of things right don't let us crusty oldsters turn you off cause this game needs young people.
The running joke with our group is that field trialers are either old or dead and the former is preferable.
Good luck with your dog and remember you don't have to run every trial that is out there. Your dog is young and you will have time to enjoy him.

I'll piggy back a message to Mike here. You know where we are and you being the next best thing to the devil know that we would welcome you. Hope to see you at the York trial.

More congrats to Howard, Kevin Cheff and to Lee W

I just stumbled on this post and you should have seen Tie run, and Howard handle him at an extremely competitive ameteur at the Wolverine Retriever Club...they came up with a 2nd place in the am, but were a breath away from a win.

Congrats!!!
