View Full Version : E-Collar Preferences

Not to get into when and when not to use an e-collar, or how to properly condition your dog to it.
What is your preference on momentary vs. continuous stimulation in a training and/or hunting scenario?
Are some e-collars better for mild temperament dogs vs. sensitive dogs?
How much range do I really need? (won't be hunting the plains of Sask. or Alberta anytime soon)(mostly wetlands/alders of Ontario)
Do you prefer tone or vibration or both as additional features?
Thanks for your opinion; I am trying to figure out what training collar configuration will best suit my needs. So far I am leaning to the SportDog brand.

Tri-Tronics
I purchaced Tri-Tronics on reputation and suggestions from trainers far more experienced than myself.. and I couldn't be happier :)

Tritronics, no question here...everyone has a preference though...
Since I went with a more reliable and consistant collar, and am learning to use it responsibly and effectively, there has been a huge turnaround in my 3yr old YLF....
As for momentary vs. continuous, I use momentary for everything, except for collar force fetch, and that is very low on the dial, I can't feel it, but the dog blinks:confused:. The only other time I would go with continuous is if my dog was in danger, running towards a road and blows a whistle:hand:, or a she decided to go after a deer or bear.:rip:..heavy bear population where we duck hunt...
That's just me though...

Tri-Tronics, from what I can see only offers a 2yr warrenty. Has anyone had an issue with thier collar or the repairs it needed?

TT is all I have used, and have had no problems to date.
I use both momentary and continuous. When I use continuous,it is still just a nick(maybe a second)but it is hotter than a momentary. It would depend on the infraction and what price has to be paid on where and which I use.

I have a Tri-tronics Pro 200 G2 EXP and a SportDog Sd-2400. I have had issues with both. SportDog was great to deal with and I will be seeing how Tri-tronics is to deal with in the next couple of days. I would say that Tri-tronics has an advantage in quality and is a hotter collar than the SportDog. That being said, since my Tri-tronics broke I have gone back to using the SportDog and it works great.

Tri Tronics are great to deal with. Have only had to send a collor back once in 12 years and they replaced everything on it but the plastic collar. My only other advice is to steer clear of Innotek.

Tri-Tronics or Dogtra - Both are top notch. I have had problems with TT and Dogtra units in the past and they were both resolved immediately by the companies. I currently have a Dogtra collar.
As someone mentioned before, stear clear of Innotek.
I think the all round best collar is the tri tronics pro 100 easy to use momentary and continous are right at your finger tips no toggles or switches to worry about.I mostly use continous stimulation .I use the nick very seldom ..
Tritronics. Pro 200 EXP two dog. Had problems, TT fixed super fast and friendly. Would buy nothing else. Use nick 90% of the time.

I use both, TT sport 50 for hunting and Dogtra 350 super X for the serious stuff ;)
I use continuous, I rarely use the nick, I found that on a hard dog nicking is too much like nagging, meaning that I could acheive one good correction on continuous compared to 4 or 5 nicks. Thus my blood preasure stays at a decent level and my chances of a stroke are to a minimal........hahahahahaha.....But what do I know.....lol..

Would buy nothing else.

Both Tri-Tronics and Dogtra make really great collars, kind of like which Porshe is better red or black? They both are high quality, have good reliability, great customer service, warruntee, while providing slightly different options. Personally I have used both, and like the Dogtra "Super X" that I'm currently using. "Bang for the buck", the Dogtra as thier high end collars are a few hundered dollars more cost effective. Regarding constant vs momentary, you will need both, a wider range of intensity is nice, and a waterproof transmitter may save you from a $$ costing repair when it falls out during hunting season, or a water training session.

My D. T. collar's in the shop right know. It's 11 years old & I've sent it in 4 times for repair. Kind of fed up since I send it to Dallas every time. They're good to deal with but the turn around is tooo slow. My buddy swithed to Dogtra from TT & has been much happier. He runs a dozen dogs. I heard this winter they were all in the shop at once. Good luck or bad luck? I'll switch to Dogtra next time.

Tritronics on the recommendation of the guy that got me into this whole game a dozen years ago. I sent my first unit back after tens years of use after the battery would no longer hold a charge. I got a whole new system for $29 more than the cost of battery replacement. Turn around to Texas was 7 days, and that is great considering where I live.

Would you consider a 3/4 mile range acceptable for hunting ontario wetlands and uplands? I know it is all about topography so for the sake of arguement lets assume I am hunting in South Eastern Ontario.

I think range is a non issue for retriever folks. Most or all of them will reach out to our distances.
Burning a dog that is out of sight, and therefor out of control, is not
a common thing.
The bigger issue is, does the collar have the functions that will serve your needs.
Then look for reliability.

Then look for reliability. :nice work: 3/4 of a mile is out of most guns range :cheesy:, and if you have an out of control dog due to chasing a cripple etc.. it's up to the hunter, not the dog to control the enviornment.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllllrighty then Get over yourself, I was agreeing with you and making the point that at 3/4 mile range is not an issue for someone who controls the situation:stupid:
