So I got a sportdog 800 on the weekend. I want to start using it soon for training. I figure I will give my dog a few weeks wearing it when I take him out to play. Just so he will associate it with fun. So far so good. I tried something though. I decided that if I was going to use a e-collar on the dog, I should know how it feels. So I turned it on and threw it on my arm (at level 1) and pushed the button... wasn't a big deal. I could feel it but it didn't really hurt. So I skipped 2 and went to level 3... smarted a little bit more.. but still bareable. I have feeling that it will be perfect for a 35 lbs dog. I know that it will be different for each dog, but what level have others found effective with their collars??

levels 2.5 and 3 work best for me.

Good for you for trying it on yourself. I've been shot twice with a taser at work and since then I've always said before I put one on the dog I'd put it on myself and give the wife the zapper so I can see how it feels. My suggestion would be when you are introducing it to your dog to start on level 1 and see what the reaction is. What was bearable on your arm may be a lot more harsh on the dogs throat.

You will get a lot of different opinions on this subject I use the collar on both my dogs, my female I get her attention on a three high and her son I only have to use a two high anything higher for him will rock his world. What was suggested by verno start out low till you find the level that makes him feel uncomfortable and take it from there, and yes I have tested on myself from from level 1 to 5 :omg:

It's always good to try it on yourself first. First off you should know what the dog will feel and secondly to make sure it is working right.
Here are some videos of 2 guys testing theres out.
The third clip has some good training advice as well

actually another funny story... when I was 12 I used to work on the farm. Not being a farm boy I had never seen a cattle prod (you know where this story is going..hehe). Ther farmer and I had stopped at another farm to pick something up. I waited in the truck while he went into the barn to get it. I noticed this little device on the dash. It had a handle and retractable prongs on the top. I was bored so I picked up the device and pushed prongs into my hand. Suffice it to say when I recovered from "the shock" I replaced the prod on the dash. The farmer returned and I asked him what that device was making sure to not even touch it slightly (once bitten twice shy you know). He laughed and said "you pushed the prongs in didn't you???" No I lied. Moral of the story.... always ask before you touch stuff. Man does a cattle prod smart!!!!!

I have the TT bark collar, and I made all kinds of noise with it, and didn't get a zap, yet the dog gets them when she wears it... Funny, two zaps and she stopped yelling and whining to get out of the crate in the morning... It was kind of funny, as soon as she saw light, she's bark... she she was waking me up 2-3 minutes earlier every day...

Have started using the E-collar in the last few days. I am a little concerned about the battery life though. I have run through the complete battery charge cycle. 24 hours the first time and have subsequently charged it for 12 hours each time after. I put the collar on my dog, turned it on and left it on for a couple of hours. I did give him the zap a few times for things and I also used the beeper alot when he was good. I turned it off after having it on as I said a couple of hours. When I did turn it on again I could not get it to discharge... I used the tester and when it did not work tried it on myself. I had to charge it again to get it to work. Any thoughts???

It should not be running down this quickly. I would call t he 1-800 SportDog number on the package and I bet they send you out another battery or help you with the problem. If you can find the number email me and I will get it to you.
Their customer service is excellent.

It works on vibration Frank. When the dog barks the vibration in their throat activates the collar. That way one dog cannot get hit because the dog in the next kennel is barking.
Put your fingers on the contact points and then run the collar along the zipper of your coat, I know this works because a buddy had his in his hand and walked out and zipped up his coat and got nailed by it.

Mav, you were soooo right. Called them up told them my problem. They told me it was not likely a battery problem.. they were not sure what it was. They are sending me a replacement unit. I just have to send back the malfunctioning one. Awesome customer support. Everyone buy a sportdog. As Jix said to me today "The quality of the service tends to be as important as the quality of the product". Awesome can't say enough... so cool.
