Well, young Ruger got into something today. He was outside for about an hour, enjoying the sun, and when I brought him in his eyes were all swollen up and there was a little swelling around his muzzle. He had a similar reaction last fall and it went away on its own after about an hour. Last time there was a small wound that might have been some sort of bug bite, but this time I couldn't find anything. Anyway, I waited about an hour today but his whole face started to get really huge, so I zipped him into the vet clinic. Of course our regular vet wasn't in, it was the old cow vet. He gave him a shot of antihistamine and then said that if he had a similar reaction again sometime, just to give him some human antihistamine. I asked him what brand he would use and he just said it didn't matter. I'd rather not take any chances though - can anyone recommend a brand that they've used before? Seems to me I've heard something about Benadryl (can't remember if it was good or bad though). I've got Reactine on hand that I use on my self when I get a reaction - can I use that? I'll ask my vet on Monday but would like to hear about others' experiences with this sort of thing.
Ruger's all back to normal now (I should have taken some pics, he looked like a sharpei, his nose was so huge!) but just in case something happens over the weekend I'd like to be prepared.

You can give them Benadryl but the 2 times I have had to use it the dog went crazy for hours. Lab says it can cause drowsiness or excitability which is what I got. Talked to the vet about it and they recommended clitripilon (sp?) or something like that. I have used it twice, once on my dog and once on a friends with positive results.
What ever you decide to carry just call your vet and they will give you the proper dosage for the dog.

Crazy on Benadryl, eh? Lol, the best part about the whole thing today was how quiet and well-mannered Ruger was while he was swollen up. Poor little bugger.
Is clitripilon the brand name or the active ingredient?

I will check the trailer and see what it was. That is the one thing about Benadryl though it can cause drowziness or excitability. Don't know which one your getting untill after the fact.

Kevin, quite similer to another liquid you keep in your trailer. Often excitability followed by drowziness. :darkbeer:
Pheniramine - brand name chlortripilon
Cheers

Thats the stuff, works as good as benadryl without the side effects.
The other liquid has nausia and headache side effects at times as well, sometimes makes my head feel more swollen as well instead of getting rid of it.
