With Anna Scotts dog Willy's unfortunate incident this past weekend got me to thinking. I always carry and basic first aid kit around in the truck. I would have been able to administer basic nick and cut first aid to a dog. However if I had been confronted with such a situation as Willy's I'd have been useless. Would you have know what to do? I'm going to take a serious look into a book or seminar and learn more on how canine first aid works. For those who would have known what to do where did you learn? It would be interesting if one of the HRC or CKC clubs put on such a course who would attend. Count me in. Thanks Willy for opening my eyes a bit wider.

At the end of the day our club spoke to, and thanked, the photographer that helped out. He told us he how he knew what to do. They had reciently got a new dog and 6 months ago his wife purchased a first aid book for dogs and told him he had to read it cover to cover. Once we heard that was asked him to thank his wife for the club as well. We had his card and will try to find out the name of the book and post it here for anyone interested.

For anyone with CPR training it is basically the same as it is with people. Chest compressions and breathing, compressions are on the side and breathing is through the nose.

I know there are several people giving First Aid for animals out there. One of them is Pearl McGinn and I know of a place in Alliston called Tree Tops that also does First Aid, Herbal remedies and Canine and Equine Massage.

Yes, Pearl does them and is very knowledgable. I'm actually going over to see her today and have a chat. Maybe even see if she is open to doing a one day work shop some place.

Pearl has a course coming up in June. My wife took the course a little while ago and said it was great. She said it includes CPR and many more topics. You also get hands on with dogs. Here is a brief description:

She might also be able to point out other people in the province that are certified to give the course.

I was very fortunate to be able to read an instructors manual a few years ago and it was very helpfull. I am also just in the process of updating my human course. I would hope that if I ever had to use it I could step up to the plate.
