I was talking to a Royal Canin/Medi-Cal Rep last week and they've found cyanuric acid contamination in their rice gluten from China. This is human grade ingredients so it's very likely it's entered the human food chain as well. People aren't likely to be affected as we'd only be exposed to this intermittently, not eating it every day. This cyanuric acid was added deliberately to increase the nitrogen, hence protein analysis and increase the "value" of the raw material. Prolonged ingestion can also potentially cause kidney damage. Royal Canin found it because they went looking, it's not something routinely screened for. I would expect recalls from other manufacturers once they test for it. For now it seems like the FDA in the US is sitting on this to give manufacturers time to test there products. If your current food lists rice gluten in the ingredients list I'd call the Manufacturer and ask for info on this potential risk and if not satisfied with the answer change diets until this all shakes out.
