I've been looking over some E-Collars latley trying to decide which to go with. I've never owned one before. There are so many out there to choose from, im not really sure where to start. I do want waterproof / submersible. Im not sure of anytime I would need anything more than 400 yards.. Would I ever need more than that for a retriever?

Just got a sportdog 800. Had some problems with it functioning correctly. I called their helpdesk and they sent me a new one. Just got it yesterday will be testing it tonight. I think it will be fine. I guess my point is that this company's support alone makes the product worth it. I have heard alot of good things about the sportdog units as well. I would buy one again if I had to do it all over

So I want the extra range. He loves to roam. I have found that in the short little bit of training I ahve done with him

I've got the Sportdog Wetland 800. The only thing I had to change was the contacts, I had to get the longer ones. Called their helpdesk and I had them within a week, no charge.

I like Tri-tronics myself. I prefer the tubular style collar reather than the sport model type myself.
I have owned a Flyway, then a pro 200 2 dog and now have a field 90 3 dog and like it the best so far.

Oh ya, the ranges they give you are under ideal conditions with perfect line of sight so they are a little misleading sometimes.

I have a Flyway and a Pro500 Tritronics. Really like them both. They are getting older but I have had no problems with either. Tritronics also gives great service.I have ordered new bright coloured collar straps as I have a great deal of difficulty seeing the brown dogs when they are out on a long water blind or in a corn field.
Had Innotek years ago and had nothing but problems with them, found they really didn't want to service them.

I have been using a flyway collar for the last 4 or 5 years I replaced the batteries last summer you have from 1 to 6 levels I only have to use level 3 to get my young lads attention. I,am very happy with it, my male dog even likes it he knows were going training

I have a Sportdog 2400. I have had the collar replaced once and the transmitter replaced twice in three years. With that being said Sportdog was great about it, and they sent a new unit before I had to send back the old one.
This past year I bought a almost new TT Pro 20 G2 EXP. I really like it. I would say that the quality is slightly better than the Sportdog, and I have had no problems with it so far.
From a price point you can likely get a slighty used TT for the same money as a new sportdog.
I agree with Kevin on the design of the transmitter. I like the tubular type as well.

Are there any sites that would be a good resource to look for used e-collars?

The one I know of is the collar clinic:

The collar clinic is a great spot for used collar's. You can also watch the classified section over at Retriever Training forum ( RTF ) as there is usually lots listed there.
I have never used a Sportdog collar but I have heard many good thing about them, I personally have a Tri tronics Pro 200 EXP. It is a little pricey but well worth it in my eye's as you have the ability to add aditional collars ( up to 3 ) to be used off the single transmitter incase you add more dogs later. Their customer service has been great to me also.

I got the Tritronics G2 Pro 200 2 dog. Very satisfied. Collar Clinic good spot for refurbed collars. Got mine new from Lion Country Supply. All the collars have had some issues, but would recommend TT in a second.

I don't know a lot about sport dog but I have had my TT collars for over 20 years. Now I am know as kind of cheap skate but I have had my first collar since the late 80's it is an old gold tube A1 80 and I still love it but it dosen't hold a charge anymore. It has been sent back only once for new batteries and that was around 1998. My current collar was a refurbisher unit from TT itself and is the 100 pro that I picked up around 2003. The 100 pro still works but the transmitter collar charger 18v is not working ( I use another charger). It has worked well and I enjoy the ability to change levels on the transmitter if I need to. The only advise that I offer is I wish I had the pro 200 that has more momentary levels and less continous levels. I like the new expandable collars but I won't think about one of those for several years.

We have 2 TT collars, a 100XL and a 500XL. Have changed the batteries once, this spring, on the 500. The 100 is still going strong after 8 years, the 500, 6 years. have heard really good things about the Sportdog. Probably would have bought one if they had been around when we bought our TT. Will say that you may want to look at something that goes farther than the 400. With the terrain and weather conditions you could get lucky and get 100yds. out of it. The 400 is for a flat field in perfect weather conditions. I would feel safer with the 800. At least you know then you will be able to stop your dog if he gets into a dangerous situation where you really need that collar.

ZingerWinger is here in Ontario, and I think his prices are competitive. No problems with duty shipping within Canada. His Dogtra 1700NCP is $350Can. I paid $300US for mine. It is a much superior product to my old Innotek.
