View Full Version : alergies AND dogs?
So now that suzy is getting over her alergic reaction and the kennel cough she picked up while hospitalized..
Her iching is coming back.. oatmeal baths are not helping.
I have heard of people giving thier dogs benydral and that the liquid version is dangerous because of the alcohol level. You should only give the tablet form.
Anybody here use it?.. did your dog have any side effects?

I've used liquid benydral a couple times, funnny thing with it is it can cause extreme drousiness but the other side affect that is not as common is extreme excitability. Gave some to a young dog once after a reaction to a bug bit or something and the dog literally spun in circles in the crate ALL night.
Talked to my vet and now carry chlotipilon (sp?) in tablets, used it a couple times with no problems.
I think there was another post a while back about this, may want to search on "benydral" and see what comes up.

Try giving your pup some omega 3 fatty acid suppliments. Indy had itchy skin and this took care of it. Also made her coat nice and shiny.
You could also add yogurt to the pups food. Sometimes this helps if a food allergy is causing the itchy skin issue.
I have used liquid benadryl in the past for various reasons on vet's recommendations and luckily have had no side effects.
Thanks for the suggestions we'll give these ideas a shot..
Greg, how about trying some grain free food in case the allergies are coming from her food.

Greg? Try washing her in Selsun Blue and adding vegetable oil 1-2 tbps. to her food. Sometimes dogs get itchy just because of seasonal changes. Have you tried a different food as suggested?
I have a story about benadryl! Thank goodness it worked out ok. I groom pets, well I had an english cocker spaniel come in an usually this dog is fine to groom just likes to lick and move when you don't want him to. Half way through his grooming I realized that he had his nose on the table and was very lethargic! It amazed me but then I got worried, what if he was sick? I called his owner and asked her, she admitted to giving him liquid benadrly. After keeping an eye on him for about 10 more mintues, I called her back and asked her please come get him, he was too sleepy for my taste. She took him to the vet right after she picked him up and she had accidently overdosed him! She almost killed her dog! The vet told her to never use benadrly and that you have to be very careful because you never know what kind of reaction you will get, higher than a kite or sleepy like the dead. Just wanted to let you know my experience.
We are going to try the natural approach first because she has such a bad time with medications.
When she first came home from the hospital and wouldn't drink we were putting a few drops of olive oil in her water. She seemed to like that.
Gonna try omega 3 & yogurt. If that doesn't work we'll change her food to a food with no grains.

Just a note: If you use Omega 3, you need to also supplement with a Vitamin E. The Omega is lacking something that the Vitamin E takes care of and if you aren't careful you can do more harm. I supplement my dogs and found out about the Omega 3 and Vitamin E thing when I was resaerching what supplements to use. Just wanted to pass it along.

Hey Greg,
Do you know that she really does have allergies or just sensitive itchy skin? If you know what the allergy is then you can treat it apprpropriately - holistic or otherwise.
My golden was itching, scratching and biting her feet something terrible. I finally had her allergy tested and lo and behold most of her allergies were food related and the biggest allergy was Chicken and RICE. She tested off the scale for rice. Guess what I was feeding?
I now have Jett on a Potato and Duck formula and no problems with the exception of spring and fall and that's when the hay fever and the other non-food allergies kick in. At which point we grin and bear it for a few weeks and then all is well again. If she really gets sneezy and itchy runny eyes then we go to benadryl for a bit just to get over the rough spot.
I recommend you find out what allergy you are actually dealing with so that you can sort out a plan of action. Could be that you don't have to give any meds at all. Just change the food.
Good Luck.
