We were out for a walk at the end of scugog island yesterday. Gunner found himself a skunk and got himself sprayed good. I always thought when you pass a dead skunk on the road that it smelled pretty bad. But wow when your dog comes back freshly sprayed its 100 times worse! I could taste it. We got him down to the lake right away to clean his eyes out. Poor guy looked like he had been pepper sprayed. I guess they learn to turn their head the second time.
Thankfully the van didnt hold any of the scent. Cleaned him up with peroxide and baking soda. But he still has a bit of stink so we are gonna give him another bath or two today. Anyone have any homebrew baths that work?

The tomatoe juice does work Verno. When I was young I did alot of trapping for Coon, muskrat ect and I have been sprayed 3 times. I did the tomatoe juice bath once and it seamed to work. Other than that just bath often and it will come out in time.

Within the first couple weeks of bringing our lab home a couple things happened - she came into her first season and got sprayed by a skunk (this happened in the space of one week).
I was taking her for a walk at 5:30am when it happened. We had no hydrogen peroxide in the house and I dont live close to a 24hr Shoppers Drugmart so we used dish soap, baking soda, and water. Here is the "recipe" we used - minus the peroxide.
Skunk Smell Remover
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent. The stuff for washing dishes in the sink, not something for dishwashers.
Mix the ingredients in a large bowl, because it will boil up like Vesuvius. We are, after all, making an oxygen generator. Wash the dog with this while it is still foaming, because it is the oxygen which reacts with the thiols in the skunk stink to neutralize the odor. If it sits around, it will loose it's efficacy because the oxygen boils off. Don't try to store it in an airtight container, because it will blow up. The brew also works for clothes, humans and unlucky cats.
Another thing I found online was that you could use mouth wash - just keep away from the eyes. The dogs breath smells great
I washed her 3-4 times - once with the potion above. Used the mouthwash around her snout (where she got hit) and then a couple times with regular dog shampoo.
When she gets wet there is a slight skunk smell but not too noticible - unless I mentioned it to someone would they be able to pick it out.

See if you can find some of this Thiotrol Spay and Shampoo from your Vet. It's the best thing I've found. You may think your van didn't pick up any odour but check again in a couple of days when you get your sense of smell back:yikes: This product you can spray right on the dog or on car seats interiors etc. Goodluck,Tom

The peroxide solution works the best I have found. One dog that I have as a pet is a killer and has got at least 3 skunks, the smell does come back a little if they get wet.

I agree with DD Retrievers about the tomatoe juice also a bottle of vodka it helps take your mind of cleaning the dog with a shot or two with a little tomatoe juice that was back in my younger days :dog: :dog:

I found that the peroxide took out a large part of it, but he was still pretty ripe.
I had a look at super pet for something and found 2 products by Remington. One was a shampoo for skunks and the other was a spray that goes along with it. They work amazing. Shampoo the dog really well and then spray him after he's dry. You can use them both seperately too. I'm gonna leave them in the van for the next time it happens.
