Ok so my sister has a springer that I would like to train for upland bird hunting. Obviously a flushing dog. I am going train the standard stuff like whoa, etc. So what is the best way to train the dog to hunt close??? And how close is close enough??? what other things do I need to train for flushing dogs???:spoton:

I'm pretty sure you train a flusher to sit (hup) instead of whoa. They sit till you get up there and send them in to flush.

You will have to train it to stay in gun range. If you can do that, you can hunt over it. If you want to put the extra effort into it, Train it to quarter, and sit (hup) on the flush. It should be trained to retrieve as well.
Now you know everything I think I know about flushing dogs. Good luck!

Suggest you have a look at what others teach and get some advice from some experts.

* I trained a springer once. You'd better eat your Wheaties.

A guy that trains springers showed us how to teach our labs to quarter. That was to have a person on either side of of you out about 20-30yds. Call the dog back and forth between the two "gunners" . Every second time the dog went by the gunner would throw a dead pigeon in front of him and stop. When the dog was called back he found the bird. Was called to heel. Delivered bird and was sent out again. That kept the dog in close and taught him that that is where you found the birds was if you stayed in closer to the gunner.
