Hey Guys,

So double-t is so close to done I can smell it... but we've got on damn hurdle to over come...

Piper will take casts every-which way without a bumper in her mouth, but once she takes a bumper we're having a difficult time with her casting around carrying something.

Anyone had this problem? I'm leary to use pressure since she needs to learn, but we're not "learning" when she sits there and I wave my arms around and say back.over and nothing happens...

She will sometimes take a back, but not always, and sometimes a right over, but never a left over.

Again none of this is an issue without a bumper in her mouth.

Use the same things you would use to teach the exit during swim by. You can move up, move to the other over pile for a few so she knows what you are looking for or toss a bumper in the direction you want her to go. She is just confused right now because up untill now everytime she picks something up you have had her bring it right back to you. Just teach what you can and then the light switch will turn on.

Agree with Kevin. She is just confused about what you want. I have even gone back to a single small T to help teach the concept. Easier to get them to cast when they see the pile at close range that you want them to go to. I'm assuming you are casting her towards one of the known side piles. If you are just casting her cold and she sees nothing there, that could be your problem.

I would go back to the three handed casting drill and every so often put the dog in a remote sit position with a bumper in mouth and cast to one of the piles.make it a game. I have found if you force the the line on the TT they are worried about casting with the bumper in mouth. When they can do it in a simple drill go back to theTT.

Good Luck

I find as well that the better you teach this at this point the easier it is to teach it during swim by. You still have to show them what you want but after a few trys it is like "oh ya I remember this".
You can use the same methods that they describe in swim by articles to teach these steps on land.

Cast her over to the side pile and after she goes for the pile move over to the other side pile and call her to you there. Then try it again but just move up a bit and cast her over, you could flip a bumper to the other over pile as well to get her across and so on. Ready ahead in any material you have or watch the swim by section on your videos and use the same type ssteps they use for swim by but on land.

It will click in no time Frank, just think about it from her perspective for a minute. Up untill this point every time she picks something up you have wanted her to come straight back to you. Now all of a sudden you want her to go some where else and she doesn't get it. Just show her and it will all work out in no time.

I know that this is an old thread but I was having the same problem. A couple of trainers in my club cleared it up almost instantly.

in single T sit your dog at the pitchers mound, place the bumper in his mouth and then cast him. The look in my dog's eyes was as much to say as "OH, that is what you wanted!"

The only change was that instead of having him retrieve a bumper and then whistle sit and then try to cast him - I placed the bumper directly in his mouth (no retrieve) then cast him.

Once he got he idea of taking casts with the bumper in his mouth it was an easy transition to casting after he had retrieved a bumper.

Just getting started on the TT. When you cast the dog with a bumper in mouth to a side pile or back pile, do you worry about switching (shopping) for another bumper in the pile. I ask because I am working with Abbie to stop the switching. We're doing force to pile while on lead to make sure she goes out and comes right back.

Don't think by TT you should still be using a lead, but we'll leave that alone... I wasn't worried about shopping since I would give her a site whistle 3-4 feet from the pile... I don't think it's an invite to change bumpers, just to move over where I tell you to type thing.

lol...let me clarify a bit, the lead is in the yard with a couple of bumpers on the lawn, send her to the pile and use the lead to keep her from switching to another bumper.

When we're out in the field, no lead, no collar, just the whistle. She has the small t down and I want to enforce what she has learned with the TT.

Thanks for the input Frank.

If FF is solid then the dawg shoud not put that bumper down at all, and should only release the bumper on command.

yeah what Kev said... When she picks it up, Here nick Here... I honestly don't ever see a need for a cord once you're passed CC and FF... Mind you it came close during my TT, but a quick visit to the bench fixed her real good! lol

Now if my Damn HexaBumpers would arrive I could run some blinds...
