Hi all! New to the forum just thought I'd say a quick hello.
My name is Kathy Adorjan, I just moved to the Niagara region about a year ago and am owned by 4 Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (and a Boxer and a mutt!). I breed Tollers and we keep each other busy between field training, obedience and show.
Look forward to being part of this forum!

Welcome to the board, can't say I have a lot of experience with tollers but I do run a lot of tests down in Vermont, Maine area and they are quite popular down there and have seen a lot of nice ones running at all levels.
Kevin-who thinks most tollers look like mini golden retrievers on crack:offtopic2:

Hey Tollergirl. I have heard that tollers actually draw birds into gun range. Is this a myth... and if not, how is that even possible. Wouldn't mind seeing a video of it either if you got one. I will try to find the website I was looking at that suggested this. Thanks... oh and welcomeani

Welcome Tollergirl!
Don't mind Frank, I think he's just realizing now that he needs a Toller to lure birds in to about 5 yards so he can hit something.:harhar:
Frank , take it easy on me next time you see me.:boxing:

Hey Hunting, yes Tollers lure ducks closer to shore, it's called "Tolling", heheh.
The story goes that Tollers were originally developed after hunters observed foxes luring ducks to shore. One fox would play on the shoreline and ducks, being the bird brains that they are, would get curious and swim closer to shore. Another fox would then leap out from the bushes and catch one. So Tollers were developed to look and move like a fox. Their gait is a bit "jauntier" than other Retrievers. To Toll, the hunter stays in the blind and throws a stick or ball out for the dog. The way the Toller moves it's tail and body while playing and retrieving gets the duck's curiousity going and they swim within gun range. At which point the dog is called back into the blind and bang bang, the rest is history.
In some parts of the world Tollers are actually required to pass a Tolling test before they can get a hunt title. I think there's a video of Tolling floating around somewhere on the internet, I'll see if I can find it.

Here's my attempt at getting a few up, I have lots more pics of the dogs on the webshots site but need more of them working.
The dog in the water is Tyra-Multi HIT OTCH CH Kishkahdina Tyra WCI JH, she's about ready for her WCX and has one leg on her OtchX. The other two are her kids from different litters, Dillon-HIT CH Kishkahdina's Prince of Katyra CD WC, who has two legs on his JH, is just about ready for his WCI after getting his WC at 8 months, and the boy with the bumpers is Silas-Group placing BPIG CH Katyra's Winter Silas CD, a high scoring obedience dog I'm working on his WC but I've had some tough issues to work through with him.

Believe it or not we have a red fox that "tolls" up and down the shore of our pond. It drives the geese nuts. One of our club members has a great little toller. He would have gotten his titles quite easily but she doesn't have a great deal of time to train him. A toller won the qualifying up at Ottawa last year. Nice dogs but I'm not into long coats.

I remember a Toller placing in a Qual back in the 80s -- owned by Ray Stevens -- believe Ray got back into game recently -- also ex-wife's sister ran Toller in puppy and was trained by Dave Watts -- also remember woman who ran Tollers in HTs in 80s and 90s
