A few weeks back, Adam (my "better" half) and I had the pleasure of heading up to Little Vermillion Lake (near Red Lake) for a week long fly-in fishing getaway. The lodge we stayed at was called Sportsman's Lodge. The accommodations were excellent, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the owner was extremely personable. Most importantly though, the fishing was great! :clap2:
We set out on Wednesday afternoon and headed up to North Bay, where we spent the night in a motel. Thursday morning we started out early and drove to Thunder Bay where we slept again. We wanted to avoid driving at night as much as we could, for good reason. Coming home we saw an overturned flatbed tractor trailer who had hit a moose the night before. Not pretty! Friday afternoon we finally arrived in Red Lake to meet our pilot who flew us into camp.
The weather could have been much better. Seeing how we were about 2.5 hours from Winnipeg we woke to snow two days. Coming from smog alerts at home to wet snow and icy winds all day in the boat was kind of weird! In general, the weather was cold, wet and dreary. The serenity made up for it all though, makes it hard to come home after being up in an area like that!
Like I mentioned, the fishing was awesome. The pike fishing was super. The heads on those fish were unlike anything I've ever seen before. I've caught lots of muskies in my day, but the heads on these pike made the muskies I've caught look like little pukes. Absolutely unreal. I hope I can get back up there one day to catch them in all their glory, end of summer or fall when they've packed on some weight after the spawn. The walleye fishing in the lake was also outstanding. We had fish for dinner a few nights and we never spent much time getting what we needed.
Anyways, enough of the chatter! Here are some of the pics. Enjoy!
