I just wish we could make it like the old days, where it was more realistic playing field and spectators could get a real feel of our sport and the bar would be razed with even higher quality of dogs entering. Just my 2 cents:violin:

hey tony if all they need is a little dirt i`m looking out back and i see piles of it .you have to realize most of those dogs live on carpet and it makes them comfortable . thats why most guys start training for it around christmas time while they still have the tree in the house they tell there wifes the piece of split rail fence and the straw bale in the living room is for that down home country feeling . and your all set to train in the comfort of your own home

Tony I know how you feel, when they changed from running in the big arena with a bigger picture of what our dogs could do.

It's difficult for the NRCC to attend and provide a booth.Yes there are some Ontario Directors who might make that happen but the executive can be found distributed across Canada-don't think we're going to have our folks from BC , Alberta and NB attend-just not reasonable. They're not about to fly in for this event and many of us are still south.
No doubt they could provide an understanding about that which we are about but hardly practical. Probably better to see if some local clubs could attend and share the responsibilty across several days. The ORA group ...might consider some organization but travel is expensive and time consuming.
There was a time that the Sportsmanshow gave back to the Retriever Clubs in Ontario, a payback for attracting the large crowds who attended. This is not the case now.
Still worthwhile but a long way from the original "GOLD WHISTLE" competition.

Hey Chris, just put some dirt down so Chevy can kick it up and we would be their in a hart beat. I just think that the retiever game (ALL) of us could do a better job in promoting the sport we love; just like what Big Bird said in his post and when a venue like the sportsman show comes along we shouldn't over look it. The National only had 80-90 dogs in it and the Grand had only 13-14 dogs from Cananda, so if we could set it up right ( I would give a hand and put in the time for setup and take down); and put on a show for the sepctators we may end up with some new pepole and dogs in the game; that would help us ALL....:thumb:
Take it easy boy's it is what it is and it does serve its purpose. The spectators love it and the duck hunters would love to have a dog like we do.I know Rob at the Zinger Winger booth does a good job of promoting the retriever sport and John Sinclair does a good job of explaining that it is only a demonstration and that those interested should get in touch with a local retriever group.
If the outdoor show had the same room they once had i'm sure it would be trhe same as it used to be but we must go on...

When I got my first lab and hit the wall in training by myself, my main priority at the sportsman show that year was to seek someone from my area that I could train with and learn from.
Many others in Southern Ontario have done the same thing.
Regardless of the quality of the venue or the nature of the tests, that still holds true.
It's a good open door to our sport.
It would be a shame to lose it.

I know of 2-3 Current trainers including myself that are direct result of the Sprotsman Show. I have run it for 2 years and would hate to see it go. I am double thinking running for a completely different reason.

i must be getting old . back when i ran the sportsman show it was in the big areana and they had to use dirt i don`t think carpet was invented yet .and yes i have ribbons to show for it and ran a chessie at the time . also had the privedge of running against dennis voit and toco that was a dog . you need to understand were not putting it down we are trying to create an intrest the sportsman show is were i became interested and to me at the time of seeing those dogs run the final day was the greatest show on earth what we are trying to get across is we train outside and in a natural inviroment why not try to simulate that at the sportsman show .my only intentions are to promote the sport and show what these dogs can really do .
I hear ya Rick .But in the old days it was run in the coliseum which I think is now the new Rico centre. The old coliseum was already dirt. I remember going down to the show before it started to spread out bags and bags of leaves that were collected in the fall.
Can you imagine the expense that would be involved to fill the area you guys are talking about with dirt and building a pond like they used to have? We are in a world of limited extra cash. Maybe all the other venues at the show should pay to have all this work done because the retriever event is the big draw or it was any way .I do not think it is the draw it used to be .I would think that if you were to poll the crowd at the show what did they come to see it would be the big air show first and I think the retriever event would come in 3rd or 4th not because of the size of the ring but because of society today.

Lee
It has been a Ice surface ther for a long time. Even before the New Ricoh center.
They used to pill the dirt up behind the building under othe over pass.
I heard something years ago that the building charged over $30,000 to take the ice out, put the dirt in , take the dirt back out , and put ice in.
The royal generates enough income to be able to afford the expense .
With the show shrinking in recent years they had to come up with another plan.
The booths are priced insane . You have to move alot of product in the shorten show to cover the cost involved. Plus travel extra staffing etcc.... especially if you have a reatil store that has to remain open also.
It all comes down to cost boys!!!! Anything is possible for a price. How much are you willing to spend!!!

yes the everyday cost alone just to train and putting a hunting show on with field training is falling to the wayside . the dock dogs and agility / flyball hold more intrest because everyone young and old can get involved with what ever they have for a dog no matter the breed .no matter what sport or what part of the dog world your involved with . it take time money and training .my hats off to all of them .rick

Lee; you are so right about Rob and John, they do the best with what they are given and they should be commanded for there efforts. I guess the cost would be big bucks to over come but they did take out the ice and filled it with water for the boat show. It would be great to find some country fairs that, we as a whole group could put on a true demonstration. Maybe I'll start a new thread on the possibility of a demonstration@ some country fairs for the up coming year...

hey tony you know my place an in the province sort of half way between toronto and windsor . and not to take away from the topic of the sportsman show .maybe we should put on a open house and invite people out for the day to show what we do with ongoing demo`s with the dogs land and water . for people that are showing an intrest in the retriever world and trying to find out how they can get a start . and how they can find info on clubs in there area .i`m sure we can get dogs and handlers from each club .just something to think about . and we are talking all retrievers . hrc / hunt test /field trial .rick

Finally response with an offer to help not just sit and complain about what someone else has tried to do...Good for you Rick.
Now here comes the but .ORA tried to do something very close to what you are wanting to start .Here is the main problem we came across.
1 when to hold such an event .It was very difficult to find an open weekend to hold the event and have all venues able to attend.
The difference between what ORA tried and what you are trying to is that we called it a Championship if we had called it a demonstration maybe it would have worked out?
The other issue that might hurt us is that with a demonstration we are hoping to get people out only to see retrievers work.Holding this event in concert with an outdoor type show is that you will get the people out easier.
Not trying to shut you down I think this is a good idea .I just wanted to tell you what happened to us so it won't happen to you...
Good point Lee, The Canadian Outdoor Expo was where I got hooked. I went there looking at fishing boats and found the Red Flannel Challenge - would have been cheaper to buy the boat.....

Well said Lee, I think WE as a group are getting closer to something... If an origination like the ORA or just a bunch of guys from all groups that would like an event like this to take place it would have to happen @ the end of August between trails. Town country fairs would still be best venue because of the number of people that would show up to watch; it is the people on the outside of the circle we need to bring in.

Liability:tsk: - the fair board I approached (small municipality, not PS) was not interested in securing coverage for a retriever exhibition.
I think using fairs would be a great venue to expose people to our sport in a controlled fashion.
Cheers,

I certainly think small fairs are a great way to enlighten people. I put on a demonstartion last August for my local fair. It was well received. The upside was I met some folks whom I didn't know(even in a small community) who were keen to tell me where they lived if I was interested in using their property.
Certainly very beneficial.
