A good link to help understand HDH as presented by Dr. C.E.Hjerpe. Although it is based on his observations of field trial pointers, I'm sure a lot of the recommendations are transferable to other hunting and field dog breeds.

Hallo! Thank you for the information! I am a German breeder and i am always astonished, who many illness there is in canadian and americon breeding. i very often read about the inzest-breeding- line breeding- i never answer, because i know, it is useless. but i think, that the german breeders do not know this illnesses because we outcross or do mild line breeding and not the inbred like in USA and Canada. I remember a fellow named Bodo that I once met, had something to do with being the founder of the Pudel Pointer Club of America, and one of the founders of NAVDA in North America or at least in Canada. Funny to know that he actually got permission from the overseers of the PudelPointer breeding comittee somewhere in Europe to breed a Pudelpointer bitch to an American bred English Pointer (line bred at that) stud dog to try to get rid of the hip dysplasia problems in the Pudel pointer breed. Didn't these Pudel pointers all come from Europe somewhere starting in 1956? Oh yea and Bodo, I believe he was from somewhere in Europe as well. Must have developed the Hip Dysplasia on the way over.

Hallo Emma,
You may want to do some Google searches on Canine Hypoglycemia or ask your vet about it before you suggest that it is only in Canada and USA.

The intent of this thread was to help dog owners recognize if their hunting dog was experiencing hypoglycemia and what they could do to prevent and help elleviate it if their dogs were prone to it.

The intent was definitely not to start a negative discussion about the different breeding practices from different countries.

Hello Jim- i am really thankfull for the information- but really- i did not know many of this illnesses before i read them in american or canadian forums...

with HD- we Xray and a strict order forbids to breed with bad hips. the result is very good and does not have anything to do with inbreeding or outcross.
And- someone argues with 1956!!! - oh- Greeting madonna

Hallo! The PP population is very, very small- and they have - in my opinion- a problem with inbreeding.A good example for problems, that come to exist- But i do not think, that they want to eliminate HD through this bred with an English Pointer, but to have a greater gen pool.
the HD- is X-rayed and only parents with good hips are allowed to breed.
and- you argue with 1956!!!! Hallo- this was 11 years after 2. world war at the beginning of the breed- nogreat knowledge of the HD at this time- a long time ago- not good this argument.

The point was that even though you may slag the breeding practices of Americans and Canadians, other people from your country have used these same dogs to try to improve their breeding program.
