I am looking to plan a week long bird hunt somewhere in Canada. This will be my first bird hunting trip and will likely be a solo mission as most of my buddies are waterfowlers only.

I am fairly torn between what I see as the three options in Canada; Huns/Sharptails/Pheasant in Alberta or Saskatchewan (minus the pheasants in the later), or Grouse/Woodcock hunting in Quebec/New Brunswick or Ptarmigan hunting in Newfoundland.

I would be basing my choice on ease of access to hunt-able land whether it be private or public, $$$, and what would be the best experience for the solo rookie handler and his rookie dog.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated !!!!!

I am from AB. and have run dog in SK. regularly. Both have great hunting but if pheasants are a must AB. (I would recommend for first time hunting located in the Brooks area) a little crowded in the first week but thins out fast. Sharptail open in SK. around the 2nd week of Sept. AB 1st. week and Huns around the 2nd week in both provinces. Sharptail are native grass land bird and are generally found in different terrain than Huns and Pheasants. Huns/Pheasants like rough areas around grain fields......puphood1

I am in NB, but I go to SK every year for a month for huns and sharptails, and then ruffed grouse. Sask is the friendliest, most trouble -free destination I have experienced. In normal years, the bird numbers are fantastic.
