Mike only if we see something we don't like before we sink to much time into the dog.

I think it is a good idea to do it if you are about to start investing heavily in a dog. I did Mavericks before I sent him away to a pro in the US to be trained and trialed. Not that I would get rid of a dog that had bad hips but I certainly would not want to send them away to a pro for training and to be campained.
I would prefer the dog stay with me a become a hunter and companioin.

Mike, By prelim's, do you mean elbow's, if so, when I had my girl's hips done they asked me if I wanted to do the elbows to, as it was very cheep if both done at the same time. Its kind of nice knowing the dog is OK, also nice when, or if you intend to breed. Eyes are also important.
If Im off :offtopic2: just ignore this and have a nice day,,,:icon1_lol:

No, it's getting the hips done before 2 years of age. Here is a quick read on OFA Prelim's. http://www.offa.org/hipprelim.html

Very impressive survey, a young dog having a score of excellent is 100% to be normal at the age of two. If I had of know this, I think I would have got it done earlier. but a lot of breeders still wont except x-rays before the age of two. Maybe they need to read http://www.offa.org/hipprelim.html your find. thank you for teaching me something new. ELBOWS,,,lol,,, I feel stupid now!

Good point Al. With that in mind I will keep this thread going. I have heard that the University of Guelph performs hip and eye evaluations. Is this true and what tends to be the costs involved. Any information is appreciated. I am starting to do some research as I am considering having my boy Tracker checked out.

Eyes can be done by Dr. Quinn his clinic is north of Strathroy . His phone #is under Ilderton . As far as hips get them checked before you send them to a pro I did not get the yellow female that I ran done ,sent to pro spent $10,000 and at 2 got them checked bad hip . This is not my breeding bought as a pup . enough said .Terry
