Hi Randy, Jeff told me of this event. Amber and I would like to attend. We have no idea what is involved but no matter.
Where exactly do we go for the picnic? What if anything should we bring?

Hi Gerry - good to hear from you!!
The Training Day (or Picnic Trial as some call it) will take place at Valens Conservation Area on Sunday, November 21 (the third Sunday of the month from now until April).
All of the details are in the section called "Retriever Talk" on this discussion board.
No need to bring anything but you and your dog (plus any training aids - e-collar, etc.). If you like to bring something for lunch to share, that is great but not necessary. We usually have way too much food!!
We will have two hunt test set-ups - one for Started/Seasoned dogs (which I will probably set up), and one for Finished dogs (which Scott Curtis will be setting up). They are land set-ups only.
This is supposed to get you and your dog ready for the "real thing" next spring/summer. We will use real ducks and decoys, along with the wingers and shotguns with primer poppers. Having the other dogs around and holding blinds make for a realistic test experience for the dogs and handlers. This does not count towards any points or titles - this is just practice. We take our time, and try to get corrections in as necessary. If there is enough time, depending on the number of people, we can run through people a second time. We try to be finished for lunch - 12noon or 12:30pm.
We all meet at the Powell Pavilion inside Valens for registration at 9:00am. It is a place to warm up and has a bathroom. We will have coffee and donuts in the morning, and a "pot luck" lunch. The cost is $10 plus the fee to get into Valens (which I think is now $9).
I hope that helps explain the situation.
Randy
