I am wondering what brand of medication(s) everyone uses for protection against these things? Also, when do you start and stop using them each year?
Thanks

I use Revolution from June to November for a couple of reasons.
It is effective against heartworm and it kills fleas.
The Advantage also does both but kills fleas on contact whereas Revolution kills fleas that bite. While it sounds better to have them killed on contact, my family handles the dogs a lot and I do not like the idea of my children being unnecesarily exposed to a residual insecticide.
The advantage (as I see it) with Advantage would be in a case where the dog was allergic to flea bites.
If flea control is not important to you, I would just get an Ivermectin product (not for Collies).

I use advantage and will be stocking up in a week or two.
Interesting side comment: When my dog went South the vet used FRONTLINE for those southern bugs.

Should make this point clear just in case anyone sees this and trys to use it.
Warning !
DO NOT USE IVERMECTIN FOR COLLIES

Depends on my scheudle. If I head to Pennsylvania High Flyer's HRC, I grab some K9Advantix for the added tick control. Those things are plentiful and NASTY. Get from Petmeds. Pricey, but works. If not Advantage from the vet. Supplement with HeartGuard.

I use some different meds in the spring when I travel into the states and know the areas are very BAD for ticks.
P.S. I really hate ticks!
You bet!!! I hadn't seen them until last year. Freeked me out when one of the gallery showed me one crawling on his buddy. They didn't get to revved up because they were around them all the time. Next morning my dog had 3 of them on him. Yuck!!!! They all used K9Advantix. You have to watch yourself too. One real downfall of running down there.

I also use Revolution.
P.SA. I really hate ticks!
If you hate ticks that much you should try Turkey hunting with me, I pick 5-6 of the little bastards of me everytime I go out

Friends of mine have some spray stuff that we spray on our legs and it seems to help keep them from crawling up your legs. Nightly tick checks are important as well.

Heard they had worked their way into the south west part of Ontario. Just a matter of time before they spread the rest of the way. I was looking at Petmeds and they have the K9Advantix on sale right now too.

OK, this is probably a dumb question. I thought in Canada these medications had to be purchased through your veterinarian?
Depends on what flavour of medication you want to use. You can get the Advantage and sort from your vet. The K9Advantix is another issue. My vet told me they could not sell it because of one of the "killing" agents in it was considered a "pesticide" in Canada and you had to have a special license to sell it. They had researched and tried to get the K9Advantix but legal issues stopped them. They thought it may be avaiable this year, but I have not talked to them about it yet. As posted earlier if you are not going into tick areas maybe vye for another product. Talk to your vet and let them know what you do with your dog. I liked the K9 for the tick control and the mosquito control was another layer of heart work protection.
Another tip. If you decide to buy online be very carefull of your source. I bought some from an online place in BC and they sent me a package identical to the real stuff, but made in Australia. It did not work and I called Bayer and they said even though the packaging and all the other details was right it was not there product. They suggested Petmeds. I sent it back and got my money back, but a pain.
Hope this helps.

We get this stuff from vet.. It is a little tube of liquid that we apply between the shoulder blades of the dog once a month for 5 months. Or dog is only 10 months old, but as I understand it, we have to do this each year. I will post the name when I remember what is was. It seemed to work well

That is what my vet recommends... you apply it betweent the shoulders once a month for about 5 months each year

I am in Niagara.
Last year I pulled 1 to 3 dog ticks off my dogs at least 3 out of every 5 training sessions from mid May to early July.
This year I'll be looking into tick prevention meds.
I have never found a flea on my dogs or in my house in 17 yrs with Labs.

Getting to this thread kind of late.. but on the subject of ticks.. I'm down near Fort Erie and the ticks here are BAD BAD BAD. Worse this year than normal apparently. I was pulling one off a dog or two (out of 7 dogs) daily in April/early May. I pulled a couple off of me as well (grose). I bought them all flea/tick collars at Wal-Mart for something like $3 each and they work great. I have not found a tick on any dogs so long as they are wearing their collars. I took the collars off the boys one week while doing some water work and forgot to put them back on. Within 5 days they both had a tick on them, no one else did (do very thorough nightly tick checks here).
I pull several off of the horses almost daily. I HATE ticks. Everytime I find one I'm walking around like a heroine addict for days feeling like things are crawling on me. :omg:
Lots of ticks around here, but I got K9 Advantix from the vet, haven't seen a tick on him yet but have had some on me. I use Heartguard as well, even though the Advantix seems to repel mosquitoes. The vet said it would repel them, and it seems to work, even the flies stay away from him, don't know if that's good or bad as it worries me about putting something on him that has that effect but the alternatives don't seem any better to me.
One thing with Advantix, don't let a cat get into it or get any on a cat, it will kill the cat.

You may just have been lucky for a few weeks Tollergirl. Studies have shown that those neck collars only repel at the neck. They are not a systemic insecticide.

Hi, Please read my thread on Cure for hot spots. The ACV will help with stopping fleas & ticks from getting on your dog because they dont like it. But you should still use other Heartworm methods. Good Luck!
