Here's a few pics of my now 6m old Pudelpointer pup Blitz. Have been training a couple times a week with "Dilly" and his dog "Kaiser". Working towards a NAVHDA Natural ability test this Sept.

Cheers, Tom

Those are good pictures Tom, especially considering that a couple were taken by a 7 year old. I will bring my camera tomorrow and try to get a couple of Kaiser.

BE2 and I were out again on Sunday with Blitz and Kaiser. We are still working on steadying them up. Blitz is pretty good but Kaiser has caught a few birds and likes to creep a bit yet.

Here he is getting ready to go out.

Here is Kaiser on point with the check cord on him. The pigeon was supposed to be shot after the release...but it didn't quite work out....

Dilly, I hope that's not a thinly veiled crack at my shooting prowess. It was working better yesterday with 12ga loads than those dang 20ga skeeters.

Now this a good time to ask another question.. at what point do you start shooting birds and having your dog retrieve. Do you wait until he is rock steady to wing and shot.. or do you begin to expose him to a little of that before??? My dog is starting steady now on a flush.... he still moves.. but he is starting to get the idea

At this point he's still on the checkcord for his birdwork so I'm shooting one or so birds a training session as a reward (the retrieve) and to keep his interest up. I'm steadying him on the check cord during the flush and keeping him back for several seconds after the shot before he's sent for the retrieve. He's by no means steady to flush or shot at this point, but I'm not wanting to put pressure on around birds yet either. Working on repitition and some work trailing a check cord on planted pigeons. The Plan is that with enough exposure he'll learn that busting birds equals no retrieve. Standing birds=retrieve. You can see the little light gradually coming on:spoton:
Different methods for different goals. If your gonna' run in trials you may not want to introduce retrieving at all at this point as if the dogs' anticipating a retrieve steadyness is tougher.
