View Full Version : Pet store puppy ban
It seems that Windsor is looking at banning puppy sales through pet stores. Whether you agree or disagree with allowing sales this story shows that this issue is not only an issue in the US. I hope that City Council doesn't view The Humane Society as their "experts" in dealing with this, but I suspect they will.

It should be easy to see where these pups are coming from, the owners would have to keep record of purchases and sales just like any business. If they find one pup has come from a M;;L, then SHUT them down. I've been watching a lot about this in the US, its really sick how the pups are being housed (if you can call it that) and bred to keep up the demand for pet stores. I think the Humane Society should have a part in this due to the high number of dogs they have to put down. Its better they get involved here because of the abuse that's going on, and that's what the Humane Society is for. What I don't like is when they stick there nose in to having all dogs neutered, like they have in Pennsylvania & Carolina. I also think they have to lighten up a bit on how hard it is to adopted a pet. Just make the people adopting these pets have them nurtured, this is when the nurturing should come in to play.
Our hunting dogs are being targeted as a cure to reduce the dog population, at lease the Humane Society is changing coarse here and going after the real culprits. My opinion anyway!!

Iwould like to see such a ban go far and wide. To my knowledge there are no pet stores selling dogs in London.
Years ago (before I knew any better), I bought a pup from a pet store - a GSP. She had her AKC registration papers so I thought everything was fine. She got the best of care and attention with me. Three years later I had to put her down as she had turned into a dangerous fear biter. No one could get near her. I was heart broken.
I researched her history. She was born at a famous puppy mill in Missouri. At 5 weeks of age , she was shipped along with her siblings, in an orange crate, on a train, to a broker in Michigan. He distributed the pups to a variety of pet stores in Ontario. My dog was sent to Niagara Falls. She didn't sell in Niagara Falls so was shipped to London. At 5 months of age I saw her in a window at the pet store. She had spent her whole life intransit, in a window , or in a crate. The AKC papers of course were fraudulent. One of my best memories is when she first hit the field. Unbounding joy!
I don't think American dogs can be brought into Canada in that way any more.

Its just sad isn't it. Bet she was real happy to see the open field.

The problem here is as Canadian as hockey, just read the classifieds and check the phone #'s. The paper here has ads for different breeds with the same phone #'s. I hope there is a solution to this problem because most people don't know what they are getting, and if it doesn't work out the dog suffers. I don't think that the HS will provide good advise or direction in the long run but I guess we'll find out.

It is really sad to hear about these puppy mills. What is even sadder is the fact that most Municipalities are so scared of getting a puppy mill in their area they have made the laws such that a legitimate breeder has a tough time getting a license as well. Are there areas out there that have breeding kennel licenses? Here there is only boarding kennels or 3 dog limit. Nothing in between. If you have an older retired dog and a pup, you can only have one dog you are actively running without breaking the law. I wish there was something in between.

Huntmaster,
I know we discussed this in a previous thread but this kind of "advise" that the City council is getting is why I think the CKC would be a better source of information for political leaders, but that was long ago, lol.
Case, like Kevin said, I can imagine the excitement the pup had when she hit the ground in the field.

Going in the morning with Kevin, he's going to show me how to use my new wingers & Uplander G3, got some great fields to use (freash cut). Tim not trying to :stirpot: but can you explain how the CKC can be of better use then the Humane Society?
Huntmaster, I think since the CKC supports Hunt Tests, Field Trials, CGC, WC, agility, obedience, etc, it accepts that dogs are dogs, some hunt, some pull sleds, some hold down the couch, but they accept and support these activities. On the other hand I believe that the HS has a "flavor" that does not support anything to do with hunting, and that bias cannot make them objective.
Just my opinion.

Tim

No, your right, something like this would be a job for CKC, I think they would fight hard, plus the nice thing they would have the support of HS here making a very strong force to deal with. What can we do to help, maybe a letter to our local newspaper (letter to the editor), get a hold of CKC and tell them we want to help,,what? Any ideas?

This board has a poll we all could use and send in to the CKC, but maybe all our comments on the issue might hold greater influnce, if a signature is required, maybe Drew would make it so we could print the form sign it and send it back in. Or just give us the address and we could mail them in ourselfs. That should flood the office.

Ok.. my heart just breaks when I hear about any animal suffering. But when I hear of a dog suffering.. I just about die. I feel sick. How can people treat the one animal that gives absolutely everything it has to you, be treated in such a manner... I feel like I am gonna hurl just hearing about that. That makes me angry.

I would gladly sign my name to a petition like this.

Well something like that would be a decision for Drew to make, but I have thought about sending CKC a letter but I don't know who to address it to, yet.

Tim, I would think Joe Mauro would be helpful from CKC, not sure though, he is the Chief Executive Officer.
I think I'll check into it on Monday,
O/T - How did I become an adult dog, I think I was a puppy yesterday, never understood how that worked, but I guess it doesn't really matter. Being a puppy was good though, no one on this board would get mad at a puppy

It has nothing to do with me guys, If you want to put a petition together be my guest. Give me a couple of hours and I will find an online petition that you can set up.
One thing to keep in mind though is like you I am agaist the sale of puppies in pet shops but watch what you ask for. I believe it was the latest issue of the HRC magazine that had a great article on a state that hired someone to re-vamp the pet laws. IT WAS VERY SCARY what this guy drafted up. Political leader's have no business drafting up laws that relate to pets without guided input from the CKC in Canada or the AKC in the US. And what ever you do never support the Humian Society ( at least in the US ). They are HUGE anti hunting
