How many of you guys are using ecollars on your labs? Never used on on a lab but I have a pointer now and everyone seems to use it on their pointers. Just wondering if it is a breed things.

Got one here.
It's pretty much standard training equipment IMO

I think the easyer question would be how many do not use on, I think you will find you would not get any replys then.

Kevin - TT 3 dog and 3 TT bark collars as well. Lots of electricity on my truck:omg:

The original reason for using e-collars on pointing breeds came from the field trial scene. Dogs are often working 400+ yards in front of the handler and unless you have a huge voice only an e-collar can re-inforce the behaviour you want.
Tracking collars are now the big thing and a source of great controversy on the field trial circuit. They are of course left on the dog during his one hour brace. Some people feel they mimic an e-collar to the dog.

I have a TT Pro 200 G2, and I got a Pro 500 G2 that should be in the mail... Price was right, just couldn't resit it... ;)

Like Kev, I think most people will be using them.

I have found that most pointer folks use them in some capasity or another now a days. Can you get the job done with out one? They did in the past so the answer must be yes. The collar is used simply as an extension of the check cord for KNOWN commands only.
As for the tracking collars, they are much lighter with no prongs, in fact the AKC and American Field regulate which ones can be used so they are no where near the weight of an e-collar. They are also pretty much standard equipment with most pro's now, at least all the pro's and a huge percentage of the amatures run then now on the brittany circuit. With all the time and money invested in these dogs not to mention sentimental attachment to these big running dogs it is good to have a way to track one down should they take a wrong line or have a deer cross their paths and take a wrong turn. I never turn mine loose with out one.

Your're right, Maverick. The controversy rages on though. If you go to the Cover Dog Message Board and search under "tracking collars" you'll find both points of view. For the AFTCA ( American Field) trials allowing a tracking collar is at the "discretion of the host club", and it must be stated on the Premium List.
When I hear some of the old guys in our club talk about how they trained before e-collars, I'm glad we have e-collars - pellets in the rump, running the dog down with the horse etc.
One of my dogs was daily abused/burned as a pup by the breeder. If she ( the dog),even sees the e-collar she runs and hides. It has made training her more difficult than it needed to be.
As we all know e-collars in the hands of people with an anger management problem is sad.
