What kind of paperwork was there involved to get your dogs and guns across the boarder? Also what did licenses cost you?
I have a buddy from Arizona who buggs me every year to join him down there but I never seem to get enough noticed to get everything lines up.

Paperwork for dogs - proof of current rabies vaccination
Paperwork for guns - Form 6 for the temporary import of firearms into the US. The form can be found online from the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms

You can buy a Wildlife certificate to satisfy the licence requirement on the form. That way if your plans change you will be out $5.00 instead of $100.00
I hunt ND & MT annually - according to the ATF you must purchase your hunting licence and include a copy of it at time of application for temporary import of firearms - they may over look this and just sign off but why chance it - also last several years US custom agents have asked to see my licence at time of crossing - MT based agents seem a little more laid back than the ND agents but these guys are not to be triffled with (though for the most part once the official border screening is completed they are pretty good guys) - also ATF can have a bit of a backlog so don't apply at the last minute (though they have walked stuff through for me they didn't like it) - I usually apply for the ATF permit by the end of July and usually recieve it back approved within 3 weeks (it helps when you only live hours away and the risk of sudden changes to plans is mimimal). Other things to consider going over - dog food - confirm what is/isn't allowed over - I use proplan chicken/rice large breed and have not had a problem but check 1st - friends have had thier chow confiscated - and don't forget your passport.
Don't forget about coming back - Canadian custom officers are sticklers for checking guns - if the long gun registry is killed keep the gun certificates - it'll prove you bought the gun in canada regardless of the state of the registry. I digress but; in hindsight, that small benefit may have been the only thing the registry was good for (sorry, I'm a western Canadian (ok redneck but lets not point fingers any further)).
Despite the above your real concern might be finding a place to stay - ND & MT are currently enjoying (enduring perhaps) a big time oil play in the Bakken - fyi I booked what might just be the last hotel room in Williston last October for this October - Plentywood and other towns in MT may have more rooms available but not for opening week - if that's when you want to go think 2013 and book now.
Good luck.

The forms to cross the border into the USA have a place for you PAL's info for the last bunch of years and I am curious how tuff it is going to be getting guns across into the USA if/when the reg. is scraped? I asked a Canadian border guard what we need for info on the guns coming back if the reg. was scraped and he said there is nothing in place that he new of. It could be interesting this fall......puphood1

Take a horse with you. The greatest decoy ever. They are so concerned with trying to prove you bought the horse down there and they are going to get $$$gst that they forget about everything else. Sometimes I think they are on commission.
One time I had even taken the wrong certificate with me for the gun I had. I knew it was wrong too before we got there but wasn't much I could do. I figured I could talk my way out of it or maybe they could search the registry. The inspection guy went through the truck adn trailer looking for a receipt for the horse saying we had paid more for it than the $3500 the receipt said. They told us that horse like that would go for $25,000. He actually tossed the gun up on the bed because it was in his way searching for the receipt. He was obviously a "trained observer".
I am not sure what it is about horses but I take them down there 4-5 times a year adn every time you cross back CBSA light up like kids in a candy store.
I did sorta talk my way back last fall - I keep the certificates in one folder - on my way back from North Dakota I pulled the folder to discover the certificate for the gun I had was missing - fortunately the ATF form had the serial number and certificate numbers on them - the guy cross checked the serial number against the ATF form and let me go after a brief lecture about being better organized

We were not as lucky a couple of years ago.No certificate so the gun was taken(Not mine). One year going down they asked us if we had guns because the X Ray showed the shape of a gun in our trailer. We had starter pistols and no problem
