Hey Gang,
Anyone got a line on a supplier for ducks/pheasants in the London area? I saved alot of birds that I took hunting last year but they are starting to get real "ratty" and are falling apart where I breasted them and then sewed them up again.(not to mention stink  )
I need to get some new

We could also use suggestions for good sources for ducks and can get to just about anywhere in Ontario if they're decent. Haven't had much luck with the ducks we've gotten in the past for our club's tests.
Thanks,
Pam

I can't remember the name of the guy our club gets our birds from but the are ALWAYS very good. If you want his name I can get it for from the guy that orders them.

A great source for training bird is at the tests DD, at the end of the day a lot of clubs sell the birds they have left. You usually have to pick through to get some decent ones but for the price if you take them home and dry them out and then re-freeze them you will get more than a few training sessions out of them.
I know that our club keeps the really good birds for club training days and then we sell all the rest for a buck or two a piece.

For pheasants you might try through Jim Abbey of Otter Valley Game Farm and Kennels; Jim lives in Courtland outside Tillsonburg -- pretty sure he still supplies Springer Spaniel trials where live birds are used -- Springer trials certainly source for dead birds that could be frozen and kept for training; you could buy really reasonable after they've been shot at trials

Hey DD,
The only thing about using pheasant/chukar/quail in retriever training is that they don't hold up too well. In addition, if you go to water for training, these are pretty useless. Pheasant also tend to be a bit on the expensive side as well. If you really want pheasant, in the London area, there is Royal Game Birds (Dorchester), and another place over in Aylmer.
One of the cheapest birds, that also stands up well, is using pigeons (around $2 per bird). Not great in the water, but can really take a pounding on land. Duane Cook (in Kitchener) is a member of several retriever clubs and always has pigeons for sale (also some pheasant and chukar). Send me a PM and I will send you Duane's phone number and e-mail - if you are interested.
As for ducks, there are several places our club (Luther Marsh HRC) uses. The last place was Amos Martin (near Kitchener). We were getting them around $8 per bird (very cheap) but I hear he has put up his prices (now around $10 per bird). I will say they are very big and healthy birds that will float in the water (floating is important!!). There is also another good place for ducks near Tavistock - I believe the name is Lakeside Hatchery. We have never used them but I know a few CKC clubs that do.
I hope this helps.
