Hey Gang,
I am starting to think that my 3yo is startng to develop Hip Dysplasia:cry_1: . I have been doing alot of work lately in the basement of our home and he has been real heasatant to come down and usually he never leave's my side when I am home. When he goe's up the stair's he no longer runs up them but slowly walks up.
I have also noticed that when out training when running he seams to have a "rear end hop" instead of the usual "stride". I did a quick google search on the signs of this and he seams to be showing a couple of them.
Has anyone ever had success with surgical procedure's? I would really hate to "retire him" at such a young age.I am going to call for an xray appointment in the morning

Well I just called the pennhip vet in Tillsonburg (closest one to me) and I was told since he is starting to show sign's of Hip Dysplasia (in my un-educated opinion) that they recomend that I just take him to my personal vet for xrays and exam.
Hopefully I can get him in today, I am just waiting on a return call from them

Well after playing a little game of phone tag I finally got him an appointment...... next Friday:cry_1: The good thing is they will be sending his xrays to U of G for analisis. The good thing is they are doing hips, elbows ect so I will get a good idea of what is going on......
I am going to give him some anti inflamitories to keep him comfotable for the week. Is it asprine that I give? I cannot remember....

Wow, talk about a difference in how different Vets do xrays amd what they charge. My vet does not do it so she was out of the question but here are what 3 different vets do/charge
1. One just xrays, will use sedation if needed and then they will look over the xray $150.00
2. Next vet completely sedated's the dog to do the xrays and keeps him for the night. He has to be in there for 9am and I get him back at 9am the next day....$450.00
3. Vet #3 might use sedation if needed, xrays the hip's and elbows at the same time and sends them off to the U of G for analisis
$250.00
Gee, I wonder what one I am going to use

The fees for #2and 3 wouuld include the fee for them looking at the films at the U of G. Since you are not breeding him you do not really need to do it if you don't want. If the vet is expenrienced enough they should be able to read them and give you a pretty good idea on how they look and provide you enough info on the state of his hips.
Vet # 1 is a lot less because they are not going to U of G to be read.

I had to put down our shepherd last year becasue of Hip Displacia.
It came on really quick. As you said Drew they are just not themselves, and look at stairs completely different. In the end he couldn't even clim the stairs without help, getting in the truck was a chore as well.
I hope it's not Displacia and that he's just got a sore ass or something.

Drew they only need to be sent to Guelph if you are planning to breed the dog and they will then certify them and let you know good or bad....I had to do that with Belgium Malinois that I had trained for police work as they required certification that the hips were good to work.....if you are just looking for a reading to determine if the hip and elbows are okay your vet if good should be able to provide that information for you and save you the added expense of having the vets in Guelph do it....good luck.

Kevin is right Drew....if your vet is competant and I would like to think they all are....but that is probably another forum all together...he/she should be able to read the X-ray on site. If you plan on breeding then you require the certificate or letter stating that the hips and elbows are with in the standard at that age or give the exact rating if you will you will need to pay for it....good luck.

Well today was the big day and things went as I expected. We were in the Vet's office for 9:40 am and they xray'ed Diesel's Hips and elbows.....
Well the the vet's diagnosis is that he is Mildly Displasic:censored: but he is going to wait until the results come back from Guelph. The xray's were not sent there to be certified as I have no intentions of breeding Diesel. They were only sent there for an expert opinion.
So while that is definately bad new's as far as I am concerned the good new's is that this should not stop him from competeing in a few hunt tests this year. I would like to get at least one title on him before he once again become's my hunting companion.

Drew if you can't find a vet in ST Thomas you can call Strathroy Animal Clinic and ask for Andy to do him . He has done lots for me and other labs in the area. He will tell you what he thinks or have them sent away and checked . Your choice about $150.00 If you dotnot have them sent away. As far as the stairs have you changed the light on the stairs or the stairs them self ? This will make them like they don't want to go up and down . Terry
Sorry Drew didn't think you where getting it done that quick . Lots of dogs run for years with not great hips but keep him out of the real cold water. Terry

Thanks guys,
Before I get too worked up about it I am going to wait until the final word comes back from Guelph. Here is a picture of the poor guy as he is letting the sedation wear off. It took all he had just to raise his head to see what I was doing.

I had to carry him in the house as he was still extremely doped up so I thru him up on the bed so he had a comfy place to rest.

Sorry to hear the news Drew. Our elkhound has a blown ACL and corrective surgery would have been close to $2400 and no guarantees that it would take, so we elected not to go with the surgery....now she is a lot older and this happened three years ago but she is doing fine....can't keep up to the snowmobile anymore but not for a lack of trying, she has her moments where you don't know there is anything wrong...we lift her up on the bed, in the van those types of things but she runs like a nut out of the yard so Diesel should be okay....just watch as he begins to get older.

Hi Drew,
I would ask your Vet about putting him on Tri Acta. It is a Glucosamine, Chondrotin and MSM. Promotes healthy cartilage, increase lubrication and help minimize inflamation. Check out their web site.
My vet reccomends all working dogs be on this.

Thanks Susan,
I will ask him about it when the results come back from Guelph. He's on some Anti- Inflamitories right now and I have noticed an improvement in him.

So I wonder what the vet was looking at when he said he was mildly displasic????:der: . They did say that he has a little arthritis in his hip though but said this will be easy to control.

So glad that the news came back poitive. Vet's often err on the side of caution when you have the e-rays done. Guess they don't want to say thay are ok and find out the opposite.
With your pup you might want to consider giving him/her a coated asprin (not Tylenol or IB prophen) after a days work. Also be sure that he/she has a warm dry place to sleep with no draft. Just like the bed in the picture.
