So I have a couple questions. I am interested in hunting both Fingal and Hullett for pheasant this fall. I have a map of hullet and my GPS, I am just not sure which entrance to use whne coming into Hullett in order to upland hunt. I am having trouble finding info on the net at all about Fingal on the other hand. Any thoughts or info would be great. Thanks

Hunting on the Brain

You have to park in a designated parking spot. You can't just pull over on the side of the road.
The first 2 roads entering Hullet have several parking lots all along them. The roads intersecting these 2 main roads also have parking spots. Most people tend to use the lots on the 2 main roads, so you use the lots on the intersecting roads.I like the lot on Sanctuary Road? at the shooting range. Good Luck.

Shooting at Fingal is only allowed on certain days. Some days are designated for "tourists". I know last year's days but they may be different this year. It will be posted on the sign at Fingal. I think there is only one entrance this year for small game/pheasant hunters. The other lots are reserved for waterfowl/goose hunters.

Both areas will have COs meeting you at the parking lots ( at least they were present last year), so have all your paperwork in order.

I 've brought home birds from both places but not every time I went. You MUST have a GOOD dog for both places if you want any success. If you don't have a dog experienced on pheasant your chances of finding birds is diminished. ( Not impossible but less likely.) As soon as the bird hears you it will be on the run. Pheasants do not take to the air ( like quail/chukar/ woodcock) until they are pinned between you and your dog and have no choice. If the pheasant is always 50 - 100 yards away from you , you can see why you need a big ranging dog to bring them around. That " Canada in the Rough" Show that showed pheasants 10 - 20 yards in front of them was something I have never experienced, and I've been hunting pheasant since 1960. It had to be set up for T.V.

Good idea to always work your dog on lots of pheasants ( game farms, trials , friend's farm, etc.) BEFORE you attempt a place like Hullett or Fingal .
Of course wild pheasant hunting is a whole other story. I had hoped to get to the Upper Michigan Peninsula this year but then the car died.

Sorry to write so much. I'm getting all excited just thinking about it.

Case is right on this, if you are near the Alymer MNR office they have a flyer on hunting Fingal that spells all the rules out and where to park. I was in there the other day doing a Moose tag transfer and seen the flyer. I grew up only a few miles down the road from there and the funny thing is I have never step foot in there. Always had my own spots to hunt and did not need to worry about going to public lands...

Drew waterfoul is Federal and they only have so many days to hunt waterfowl . Everything else is up to the Townships for Sunday Hunting. You also can not hunt Bobwhite Qual they have no season at Hullett. Terry

Nor would you find any unless it was one left over from a trial and those don't last long with the hawks around. I 've seen a hawk pick one up before the dog could get his point established! Awful way to lose a trial
Is there not a good bunch of wild quail on Walpole Island? I don't know if there is a season or if the First Nations People have the rights.

P.S. You can shoot chukar any day of the year at Hullett I believe.

Case I have seen Qual get up in front of me when I was hunting pheasants and you have to check your gun it is tempting . I think you can train with Chucker we used them in the quatering test for the HRC Grand a few years ago at Hullett. Terry

Nice to talk to you Terry. I've missed that. Glad you're feeling better.

I know you can train with chukar but I'm pretty sure you can also shoot them any day of the year.

Almost got shot at Hullett a few week-ends ago. Guy was hunting groundhogs and hit a tree near me. I guess groundhogs fly.
