If it makes you happy, we can call my boat a Jon boat, but Im old school and they were called Punts in my day.

From Simple English Wikipedia - the free encyclopedia that anyone can change
Jump to: navigation, search

Punting in CambridgeA punt is a flat boat with a broad front, designed for use in small rivers or other shallow water. Punting means boating in a punt. The punter pushes a pole against the river bed and this gives the punt a way to move.

Punts were originally built as cargo boats or platforms, for shooting at birds and fishing, but in modern times they are mostly used for pleasure trips on the rivers in the university towns of Oxford and Cambridge in England, and are raced at summer regattas on the Thames.

Not to sure what a Tinny is, but I will ask my Grand children, they should know!! :1:

Nice Job on Geese :)

I feel your pain man LOL!

I was out on the Early Opener and had 2 nice flocks come in. The only place good to sit on my property puts me with in 15 yards of the decoys.

First flock of 10 or 15 birds 3 shots 0 on the ground LOL!
Second flock around the same size maybe a bit bigger. I take 2 shots miss again.. they are still clucking at me so I call back and they circle around and cup again... 1 more shot.. still nothing LOL!

and this time my pup is looking at me like WHAT THE HELL! LOL!

6 years no shooting as killed my shooting skills.. guess it's not like riding a bike LOL!

Greg, I just got back from Smith Falls, Bruce Ford is a Gun Smith up there. i took my Winchester 2200 to him to have it bored out to mod, because it is full choke and i thought that might be my problem shooting steel shot with it. He took one look at it and said my barrel was bent, then he pointed it out to me, sure enough, I was shooting with a bent barrel. He said he would straighten it for me and open it up to Mod.
Im pissed in one way and happy to know I dont suck that bad this year! What are you shooting, full or Mod, maybe check out your patern on a board and see if its the gun or you, wish i had of done it! Good luck buddy, and let me know what you find out! Tom

Any idea how you bent the barrel? Were you using it to paddle your "punt"?

Shooting Steel thru a full choke. I thought that was dangerous because steel doesn't compress in the choke like lead did?

Or does it just wreck your choke eventually?

Oh I forgot I shoot a Modified

Yes, you are correct. Not recommended to shoot steel shot through full choke. My buddy did it and he had get a gun smith to remove his choke tube.

No Its Not Dangerous To Shoot Steel Through Full Choke. They Say
Not To Shoot Steel Through Full Choke Because It Does Not Pattern Very Well. So My Gun Smith Told Me.

I'm betting that's why the barrel was bent. Had a buddy do the same with a screw in choke. The choke is now on display at the gun smith. He was lucky that it didn't damage the barrel itself.

No you shouldnt use steel in a full choke gun, it can split the barrel in older guns and like heimedw said the shot wont patern right, its because steel wont give like lead did and causes high pressure in the barrel. Older guns had what was called a bottle choke, these were made to help burn the old powder they use to use, the powder we use now burns quicker and cleaner. I wouldnt be surprised if the steel shot bent my barrel either, but the gun smith said no. i had an old 870 I used with steel shot and it ended up with a bent barrel also, it was mod. time for a new gun, but I liked the winchester!

Greg, check your patern with different size shot, try 3&4, shoot at 30 yards at a 3x3 cardboard target. Some guns shoot better with different size shot!

Still no word on my barrel, so went out yesterday and bought a new gun, Mossberg, it will be the first one Ive owned, hope I like it. Could have bought the Rem,870 but it was all done in flat black, I hate that. But I love the 870, hope I made the right choice!

From Gan to Brockville you will see at lease 2000 geese along the way, cant believe you have none up there Frank, check the water, as the corn is still up in most fields. Good Luck!!

Alright... Anyone else looking at a pump, take a hard look at the 935, it's overbored (better pattern) chokes, and a rifled barrel...

Just got back and Im pissed off, the choke is not lined right in the barrel for one thing and you have to pull the trigger three time before the gun will shoot. back to Brockville in the morning and buy the 870. Mossberg is JUNK!!!!!

Kevin Hannah

Tough to beat the reliability of the 870.

Eric B
09-20-2007, 08:39 PM
True it's hard to beat an 870 however....

I bought and 870 12 years ago and had to return it three times to the states to get it fixed under warranty. 2 times for the finish comming off and 1 for an issue with my trigger. It would of went back a third time for the finish but I was fed up dealing with Rem and re-did the finish myself.

I now have an X2 and L O V E I T.:clap2:

Love my 870 for 'fowl. Bought it used 10 years ago and it is still going strong. Goes nicely in my little punt. I'd never part with that either! Taken it through water and mud where a canoe couldn't go.:icon1_lol:

Eric B, I shouldnt have said Mossberg is junk, I just got a bad gun, like you did with the 870. But Ive had two 870 before and they were by far a great gun. My Son has a Mossberg and he likes it! Well its off to Brockville to get rig of this lemon I bought! Hope he still has the 870! Or Ill be going to Smith Falls next!!!
