Thought I would try a Tuesday hunt with just me and Kaliska, Damn I had fun, let to many early ducks go bye, but made up for it in Geese. Could have shot them all day. Kaliska took a real beating from my woundies, but her tail never stopped wagging. God I had fun, and got to remember why I own a LAB! She made me laugh all morning, I must have sound like a real nut out there talking to my dog like it was a hunting buddy! I even found myself saying leave it, instead of give. :der: Limited out in Geese and two ducks, great day!

I can see how you can undue training by hunting with your dog before she is ready, but I wouldnt have missed hunting with Kaliska this year. I think I screwed up by letting her do her own thing. Hope I can fix it, in time for next years season test. She is due in five weeks, and starting to get bigger tits, Im going to keep her hunting for another week or two as long as she feels ok. I will use my son's dog as back up to give her a break. Cant wait to see her pups.
Greg, The blind was great openning of geese, but has taken a real beating by other hunters. I just cut and fill in every time I use it now. Wish other hunters would do the same! The birds are starting to flare, so I will start to hunt from my boat soon, much easier to cover. The guys are to lazy to go down river to get the cover, they just cut it from behind the blind,, :cry_1:

Thanks for sharing the vids and the dog work but I wouldn't be swiming a pregnant bitch for fear of losing the litter to posible viral infection from some bad water just my 2 cents we don't let our females near water when then are carrying pups We are expecting a litter next wednesday and stopped running belle right after she was bred.
You put to much work into researching a good stud and clearances and trainning to see it go bad.
I wish you all the best with your litter.

Thanks Chris, I asked the vet and a few breeders about hunting Kaliska! They said it was ok, but not to over do it. They also worried about the water we would be hunting in, and I told them the St Lawrance, vet seemed ok with that. Kaliska has had every shot we can get for her, a couple she has had two of, that my vet recomended. We started feeding her a mix of puppy and adult food now, plus we have up the food by a cup & 1/2.
Case has told me to look into getting her some supplements if I want to work her, so I will call today. I asked my vet when I should bring her in for a x-ray to see how many pups she was having, but they didnt want me to do it, said it was bad, and if I had trouble they would help me! Not sure what to do? Im going to hunt her on Friday, then I will put her up and do a few fun bumpers each day to keep her fit. Thank you for your advice everyone, it means a lot to Cathy & I.
still to funny how the goose was grabing Kaliska by the cheek, i though she would have dropped it sooner,,,:yikes: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Let her rest, her body is working hard enough growing puppys.
Can't x-ray untill around day 52 I think. The bone structure of the puppys will not show up on the films. So just wait another 12 days or so and count them as they pop out.

Called the vet and they said Kaliska does not need supplements, but to put her on straight puppy food now. Im to give her light exercise daily for the next three weeks then let her rest the last week and get use to her Whelping box. Im to make sure my other two pups leave her alone during this time and after the pups are born.
Kevin, I want one more hunt with her this year, I will treat her like gold on Friday. It will be just me and her, so only one gun will be fired, not six like openning day! The water is still warm and I bring a towel for her, with freash water to drink. She will be fine!

Changed plans and left Kaliska home, her hunts this year are over. Took my Son and his dog instead, we got 4 ducks and 5 geese. I had to retrieve the Geese by boat because his dog wouldnt fetch them. The dog got bit by a goose last week-end and now wont touch one. Got some work to do with her now! Missed having Kaliska with me and the wife said she cried for an hour, she seen me leaving with the coys and gun. I really planed this litter at the wrong time of year, wont happen again! :der:
